RUNWAY: MATERIAL BOY SS09

Material Boy's SS09 fashion show took place last night and we love the interplay of shapes and silhouettes, as well as the cool graphics designer Mic Eaton put forth. The comparisons to Jil Sander and Raf Simons are inevitable but we still feel that Material Boy presents a vision that's like no one else's. Definitely one of the most directional and innovative collections out now. Pics from the show ( via fashionising) after the jump.

RUNWAY AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK: FRISONI FINETTI

It's Australian Fashion Week, and although there have been plenty of shows, very few menswear designers have shown their ss09 collections yet. While we're waiting for Material Boy's show on Friday, we bring you some pics from Frisoni Finetti. The Australian menswear collection is intended to toe the line between street and formal. While the styling gave the show a weird vibe, there were some innovative ideas, and saleable pieces, in a palette of black, gray and blue. We've got pics after the jump.

MEN'S FASHION SCORECARD

This is a little old,(from April 2) but I just came across it an thought it was fun. The Moment blog ran a piece called Scorecard-- a seasonal wrap-up of fashion’s critical winners and losers. Just as the shows start to fade from memory (and as magazine editors plan their fall issues), The Moment brings together critics’ sound bites and runway images for nearly every men’s show including Tim Hamilton, Band of Outsiders, Thom Browne, Michael Bastian, and Robert Geller . They took excerpts from reviews from The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, the men’s-wear trade weekly DNR, The Los Angeles Times, The Independent, The Associated Press, and men.style.com.

RUNWAY: JAPAN FASHION WEEK, HEATH

We’re really feeling the sporty street looks of Japanese menswear label HEATH, which was presented during Japan Fashion Week a few weeks ago. The theme of the was "shadow” and the collection drew on the darkness and fear of the shadows of London, where designer Gentaro Noda lived as a child. A aplette of black, white gray and silver drove the shadowy feeling home.  Sleek suits, shiny puffer jackets, and ski pants were key items. More pics after the jump.

LODEN DAGER

We recently had lunch with some of the guys behind the menswear label Loden Dager. Paul and Alex are so sweet and together with Oliver and Matthew they run their business with a laser-like focus. While they still have day jobs, that's sure to change soon, as the label has been hailed as one of the rising stars in menswear. Loden Dager's collection of updated menswear classics features great colors, and each piece blends old world fashion sensilbilities with an appreciation for vintage menswear with an infusion of modern fashion sense.  I had the opportunity to check out their studio- a small space with exposed brick walls on
West 29th street
-- in the fur district-which is probably one of the last authentic, ungentrified neighborhoods in NYC. We've got some pics from their studio and their Fall/Winter fashion show after the jump.

RUNWAY: ENDOVANERA FASHION SHOW, LA FASHION WEEK

There's no room for color, or even the smallest percentage of body fat in the minimalist chic collection Endovanera. The line is designed by a former model, and each piece is cut to fit his super-slender frame. At the Endovanera fall 2008 fashion show in LA last weekend, the look was layered, and fit for a post urban-rocker-nomad. Silhouettes ranged from rocker-slim jeans to drop crotch styles, to baggy cossack pants worn with slouchy tees and jackets. the palette was amost entirely neutral- featuring shades of black, white and gray, with one punch of brick red.

We've got pics from the show after the jump.

ENK CHANGES DATES FOR COLLECTIVE

The summer trade show schedule just got a little less complicated. ENK International, which operates The Collective and Blue shows, said it will move the dates of its summer ’09 edition to July 21–23. The shift will allow ENK’s shows to run concurrently with Project. According to Elyse Kroll, ENK’s founder and chairman, “ENK International creates shows to bring designers and retailers together. If there is a way to make men’s market week more efficient for our stores, we will do everything we can to accomplish that. I hope that unites our industry and helps all of us anticipate a strong spring/summer ’09 season.” The Collective and Blue will be held at Piers 92 and 94, and Project will be at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. (DNR)

And Capsule Show will be held at the Angel Orensanz Center July 21 & 22.

RUNWAY: JAPAN FASHION WEEK

We've done Paris, Milan, London, Copenhagen, New York, but fashion week is still not over. Japan Fashion Week kicked off yesterday in Tokyo and we are looking forward to seeing the future... We're a little disappointed that most of Japan's more famous names in fashion are not showing this week but, Sportswear International's got reviews of some of the top shows including designers like Ne-Net, Support Surface, Mikio Sakabe (pictured here), Mint Designs, and Motonari Ono,

BPMW Present Compass: The New Directional Shoe Show

After visiting WSA last month, it was really apparent to us that the footwear industry is dying for a change. The show lacked any sort of vibe, in our opinion, and anyone looking for top tier, or directional footwear had to go through a series of weird hotel room set ups or hunt down a collection in a mega-booth maze at the convention center. So, BPMW is launching a shoe show, called Compass: The New Direction. The show will run July 28 & 29 in Las Vegas and will feature 40 of the world's coolest brands, all under one roof, with open fixturing, and a great vibe. We've already proven how fun a trade show can be with Capsule. Now witness Compass. Visit compassshow.com for more info.

Scheduling Conflict Looms For N.Y.C. Trade Shows

DNR REPORTS: ENK International is making efforts to avoid a scheduling snafu that currently has the men’s spring ’09 trade shows here slated to run in different weeks this July. Project is now scheduled to run from July 21 to 23 at the Jacob K. Javits Center and the independent Capsule show will run concurrently from July 21 to 22 at the Angel Orensanz Foundation. However, The Collective and Blue shows, owned by ENK International, are scheduled to run the following week, July 27 to 29, on Piers 94 and 92, respectively.  The divergent schedules would create a major headache for retailers and likely impact attendance at all the shows. In order to avoid a face-off, ENK International is looking for ways to move its shows up a week to coincide with Project, which is owned by Advanstar Communications. Read the full story here.

SUZY MENKES ON MENSWEAR

While the Paris women's shows are underway, now's a great time to review what's been happening in menswear. The venerable fashion commentator Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune has put together a great recap of the trends and ideas seen at the European menswear shows last month. Take a look at her slideshow here.
