FOOTWEAR: 3:33

PhotobucketThe fall/holiday collection for 3:33 draws inspiration from a unique source – “some guy” that roams around pro-skater and designer Andrew Reynold’s neighborhood. Reynolds notes with an almost tender fascination that the middle-aged Hispanic man “has big silver rings on every finger” and continually sports a de facto goatee, “black jeans, black leather cowboy boots, black western style button down shirt (un-tucked), and black leather jacket with fringe hanging from it” despite the L.A sun. Reynold’s imagines his muse with “a sawed off shot gun under his jacket” and a perpetual “pissed off” expression. Given this description as a starting point, we’re looking at the shoe collection in a whole new light.-- KB

PRE-ROMANCED BOOTS BY WINGS & HORNS

Pre-distressed leather working boots by wings + horns scream of dusty highways and moonlit romance, endowing the wearer with instant boho cred. Here's the secret: before they hit the shelves, they are soaked and then wrapped in a ball, where they dry in the fetal position, and emerge as ready-made hobo footwear for the Blackberry generation.
They can be found sold at Blackbird (Seattle), Fred Segal (LA) and Stel's (Boston). (The Stylephile)

ROGAN bOUWERIE

Rogan opened a new shop on the Bowery today, in the site of the old Bouwerie Lane Theater at 330 Bowery. Designed by Rogan Gregory, the shop’s interior is a nod to the building’s theatrical history.  A defining feature is the mirrored mezzanine with suspended stage lighting that will cater to installations and special performances.  Flat-black finishes and contrasting reflective materials combine to add to the overall backstage aesthetic. A 32 foot-long “puzzle bench” composed of moveable segments on castors lines the south wall, while a modern steel open-cube structure serves as display for the clothing collection.  The retail space will showcase the ROGAN mainline collection for men and women, as well as a curated limited edition series and a rotating line-up of guest collaborators.  Gallery-style installations will take place in the shop with a host of artists, local and international, known and un-known.

INTERVIEW WITH TIM HAMILTON

East Village Boys has a really fun and in-depth interview with Tim Hamilton. There are also some awesome pictures of Tim through the years that you shouldn’t miss (Miami 1991, helloooo!!!!) “ We first fell for New York-based designer Tim Hamilton at his presentation last February during New York fashion week. We’ve been trying to pin him down since then, and somewhere in between visiting his factories in Japan and Italy, moving his home, selling-out his first UNIQLO collection, and getting nominated for a CFDA award for the second time in his two-year career, he squeezed us in. Personally, I think he’s destined to dress every East Village boy from here to Tokyo.” Read the rest and see the pics here.

NY MAGAZINE SPEAKS TO TAAVO

Designer, entrepreneur, restauranteur, King of All Hipsters, Taavo Somer is the subject of a feature story in NY Magazine this week. Learn all about what makes Taavo cool, what makes his restaurant/store Freeman's and new bar Rusty Knot so cool, and what makes everything he touches super cool.  He's pretty cool. But seriously, he does spark major trends. He calls himself a "method designer"-- when he's working on a design project, he has to live the aesthetic he's working in. Right now, nautical is the look. Read it all here.

CONE DENIM:S WHITE OAK PROJECT

Established in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1891 by brothers Moses and Ceasar Cone, Cone Denim has been a leading supplier of fabric to top denim apparel brands for over 100 years. Today, Cone Denim is the only manufacturer of selvedge denim on this side of the hemisphere and almost certainly the only supplier of selvedge denim woven on the American looms in the world with roots reaching back to the original riveted five-pocket. The White Oak Collection is manufactured by the historically famous White Oak Plant™ which has been continuously producing denim since 1905.

More after the jump.

Inspired by the vintage styling and original constructions of the early to mid 1900's, Cone Denim developed the White Oak Collection for the premium market, denim aficionados and vintage collectors. An important but little known fact is that Cone narrow looms are American-made by Draper, a loom manufacturer that no longer exists, according to the Self Edge web site. (The store has a limited collabo range of denim with the mill. View it here.)  When the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company supplied Levi Strauss the lot of XX denim for the original Levi's riveted denim waist overalls those goods were woven on Draper looms. Through the many decades, including the golden years of workwear, Cone-forged fabric was the requisite for durable denim garments for brands both obscure and famous. Today Cone Denim continues that tradition by not compromising on quality, from fiber to fabric.

VIV GIVES US HER MANIFESTO

After forty years on the fashion stage, Dane Vivienne Westwood still knows how to pull in the crowds; an excited throng packed into the atrium of the Design Museum on Shad Thames last Friday evening to hear fashion's grand dame present her impassioned Manifesto: Active Resistance to Propaganda.
With Peaches Geldof taking the role of Alice in Wonderland and Westwood herself as the narrator, the one-hour session saw the designer encouraging the audience to "question everything" via a fantastical script referencing some of the world's greatest creatives and thinkers, from Aristotle to Picasso. Read more here. (Vogue.co.uk)

GRAM SHOES IN MONOCLE

Gram is designed by Anna Stenvi, a graduate of London College of Fashion, and Alexis Holm, who started making shoes while working as a buyer for Tiger of Sweden. Their new white leather trainers are called 395g (all Gram's shoes are named after how much they weigh) and combine classic looks with running-shoe lightness. The 395g shoe comes with replaceable heel and toe parts to "limit over-consumption and involve the shoe-owner in construction," says Holm. (Monocle)

VELVET SLIPPERS: DO YOU LIKE?

These velvet slippers may look like the ultimate in WASP style, but trust us—once you get your preppy/trad look on, you’re gonna want a pair of these … These are made by Bowhill & Elliott, a british company which was established at 65 London Street, Norwich over 125 years ago. The founder of Bowhill & Elliott, Obadiah Bowhill, purchased the business from Wright & Co. in 1874. The business passed onto his son and son-in-law, Thomas Baines Elliott, at the end of the nineteenth century. Thus the partnership of Bowhill & Elliott was formed. And the family connection continues into this new century under the direction of Roger Jury, descendant of Mr. Elliott. The company has a shop from which it retails a large selection of ladies and men’s shoes including the following brands, Crockett & Jones, Grenson, Church, Cheaney, Barkers, Loake, Dexter, Mephisto, Carcavelos, HB Shoes, Gabor, Peter Kaiser, Lorbac and Rockport. At the same location there is a small factory where Bowhill and Elliott manufactures slippers and houseshoes and specializes in producing hand embroidered velvet houseshoes and making up tapestry, needlepoint or fabric into houseshoes.  This is the ultimate in old world luxury. What do you think about them? Leave a comment!

SUPERHEROES: FASHION & FANTASY AT THE MET

Comic books meet sketch books in a new show at the Met called Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy," which runs through Sept 1. "Superheroes are a metaphor for fashion because they share an obsession with the body, its identity and transformation," said curator Andrew Bolton to Suzy Menkes for the IHT. Bolton, working alongside curator-in-charge Harold Koda, has divided the exhibition into categories such as the body "graphic," "patriotic" or "virile." (Walter Van Beirendonck's "Hulk" jacket with inflatable pectorals fits the latter category.) Menkes walked the show with Giorgio Amrani and got some fun insight into the designer's childhood obsessions with comics. Read the full story here.

KEITH HARING MURAL UP NOW

Today would have been artist Keith Haring’s 50th birthday, and to commemorate this milestone, The Keith Haring Foundation, Goldman Properties and Deitch Projects announce the recreation of Keith Haring's celebrated Houston Street and Bowery mural. The mural became an instant downtown landmark after Keith painted it in the summer of 1982. The mural was up for only a few months in the summer of 1982 before it was painted out but its image remains imprinted in the memory of many people who were part of the downtown artist community in the early 1980s. The new mural will only be up for a month so hustle on over to the hottest corner in NYC to take in the view. If you’re a big fan of Haring, you’ll also want to see the new documentary about the artist, by Christina Clausen, which is on view at the tribeca film festival. The  documentary offers an affectionate, deeply personal glimpse into Haring's life, from his early years growing up in a small, conservative Pennsylvania town to his heyday as a world-renowned artist. Haring's family and childhood friends offer anecdotes about the artist's early years, when he basked in '60s pop culture and developed a penchant for drawing, but it is the recollections of the '70's and '80s New York art scene that form that heart and soul of this documentary.
