OKI-NI'S LIMITED EDITION SNEAKS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER

Hotness! Oki-ni is offering a collection of limited edition sneakers available only by pre-order for the site’s subscribers. Designed by rising star Julia Hederus, this new limited footwear collection is inspired by the style of K-Swiss wearing badass youths from London’s rough and tumble Hackey neighborhood. Hederus’s work has already drawn favorable comparisons with the ‘clean and clever’ approach of Belgian menswear futurists, while her minimal yet subtly playful approach also carries distinct echoes of the Japanese school.  Shop the site here.

MEN'S FASHION SCORECARD

This is a little old,(from April 2) but I just came across it an thought it was fun. The Moment blog ran a piece called Scorecard-- a seasonal wrap-up of fashion’s critical winners and losers. Just as the shows start to fade from memory (and as magazine editors plan their fall issues), The Moment brings together critics’ sound bites and runway images for nearly every men’s show including Tim Hamilton, Band of Outsiders, Thom Browne, Michael Bastian, and Robert Geller . They took excerpts from reviews from The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, the men’s-wear trade weekly DNR, The Los Angeles Times, The Independent, The Associated Press, and men.style.com.

LOCKED & LOADED: CONTEMPORARY ART AT JOSHUA LINER GALLERY, NYC

April 11th marked an impressive debut for the brand new Joshua Liner Gallery in New York City. While the private party drew a host of recognizable artists, including Futura, Kaws, Stash, Mark Dean Veca, and Ron English, a pinstripe laden Mr. Liner stood out as the true star of the evening. The aptly titled inaugural exhibit, Locked and Loaded, proves that Liner, (former co-owner of Philadelphia’s Lineage Gallery) has his sights set and aims to be a contender in the the NYC art scene . Indeed the show drew upon an array of heavy ammunition with English, Veca, Futura, Stash, Aiko Nakagawa, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Josh Keyes, Greg Simkins , Damon Soule, Oliver Vernon, and Kris Kuksi all taking part - many displaying large-scale works. With several of the 27 participating artists scheduled for solo shows in the coming months, Liner’s target doesn’t seem to far off. See the full exhibition at the gallery web site, (Guillotine)

MARC JACOBS SURPLUS

Marc Jacobs has tapped back into the military theme that inspired some of Marc by Marc's S/S collection last year, with a new range of recycled military goods. Previews of the 'Marc Jacobs Surplus' line include this M-65 and German Mountain duffel bag. The duffel looks great, but might be hard to pull off without looking like you've just come back from tour of duty. Reasonably priced, as you come to expect from M. by M., the jacket is $79 and the bag is $65. (Brandish)

BAPE HARAJUKU: SERVING UP JAPANESE STREETWEAR IN ALL AMERICAN DINER STYLE

The streetwear world is all a twitter today because a new BAPE store opened in Harajuku. The store, designed by WonderWall is a glass enclosed marvel and the interior is  riot of color and pattern. A quote from the WonderWall web site describes the space: " For the Bape store, after discussions with Nigo, we decided to create a store that felt like a town within a building with an American diner flair. However, for the top floor, a sense of playfulness was added with a colonial style resort inspired space."  We've got some pics of the space courtesy of Wonder-wall after the jump.

LEVI'S BETS ON PREMIUM

Levi Strauss & Co. may have built its brands with bottoms—the company is synonymous with 501 jeans and Dockers khakis—but CEO and president John Anderson is aiming to leverage that heritage into complete lifestyle collections that garner a much larger percentage of sales from tops, accessories, footwear, outerwear and other categories. The strategy is aimed at jump-starting the company’s $4.27 billion in sales—which have been basically flat since 2003—and diversifying the company beyond its iconic bottoms businesses, which currently account for about 87 percent of total sales.  “I think the mix should be 50/50,” said Anderson in an interview last week in Levi Strauss’s New York showroom. “The real opportunity for us is in tops and other categories—we need to drive those businesses even harder. In our own stores we’ve already hit that ratio. We need the opportunity to put those tops in front of more consumers.”  Read the full story here.  (DNR)

Q&A: JASON CHEECH HALL

Jason Cheech Hall, owner of Format, one of the coolest boutiques in Queens stopped by the showroom the other day and we got to chatting. If you haven’t been shopping in the outer boroughs lately, Format offers locals a little taste of the Manhattan experience: with a brand roster that includes The Hundreds, MHI, Nudie, Pegleg, and Accomplice.  But the store is just his side hustle: he also has a day job, working as a denim specialist for RRL. When it comes to jeans and trends, Hall really knows what’s up, A dedicated denim head, he actually sits in a tub of freezing water with his jeans on to achieve some cool whiskers, and will walk around all day in wet jeans or abrades them with a nutmeg shaver to get the perfect worn-in look.  We’ve got a quick Q&A with Jason after the jump.

So, What do you do?
I was always fresh. As arrogant as that sounds but my mom kept me real preppy like Carlton from Fresh Prince…lol. I fell in love with fashion circa 1994 in Crown Heights Brooklyn, I was 13 years old and fresh from Miami and so engulfed in Polo that it felt like a drug, I still can’t shake it. Thanks mom, for spoiling me rotten so I never had to shop-lift.  I thinks it’s ironic that now I work for I guess the biggest drug dealer in the fashion industry ever…lol.  I’ve been working with denim for more than 2.5 yrs now, I started at Diesel as a Denim Apostle, now I’m a Denim Specialist for RRL.  I also did some independent consultant work for a few boutiques in the tri-state area. I’m so proud to work for Ralph Lauren, because one it’s so hard to get into, and to it’s the best learning experience ever. It’s especially dope to go from Farnsworth to Cheech in hours. I have two identities: I’m like Bruce Wayne, it’s great. I go from the country club to the corner store, and still be respected on both sides of the spectrum.

5 Things I am into now:

POLO Black Label Sport
Black Label Sport is  the label to watch from Ralph Lauren. It’s totally geared toward the more trendy younger demographic. It has a European cut, a sleeker fit and definitely will be on Level 10 come the Winter/Fall Collection.

Neighborhood Denim
The uality of this denim, the direction of this brand, along with the collaborations, make this label stand out tremendously amongst the many denim lines out of Japan. My personal favorite they always seem to out doing every wash they create.

Nigel Sylvester
Street BMX Rider…If you don’t Know Google, You-Tube him…get familiar quick…or check X-Games (Brazil).

Ato
Toughest sneaker out of Japan since the Bape….hopefully won’t catch on for a few more years(Doubt It)…But a great find…If you can find them.

RRL
My everyday jeans since Levi’s started doing all these mainstream collaborations that started to break my heart. They break-in well with no heavy logos, and actually give me a little bit of ass…considering its always absent in other brands…lol.

CARIN WESTER FALL/WINTER 2008

Carin Wester may not be that well known outside of her native Sweden but that’s about to change. With her spring summer pieces just hitting shops, her collection is getting tons of coverage. At We Are The Market, we’re already looking forward to fall. The collection debuted at Swedish Fashion Week in January, and we  love the playful proportions, experimental silhouettes, Where’s Waldo styling, and use of color in a way that still makes us feel at ease. Wester studied at Sweden’s acclaimed Beckmans College of Design before working for Paul & Joe for 8 seasons. She launched her eponymous label in 2004.

 More pics after the jump.

MUSIC: SHE & HIM- WE LIKE THEIR STYLE

She & Him, the new singing duo comprised of composer M. Ward and indie actress / singer Zooey Deschanel, is hitting NYC for a couple of shows at Hiro Ballroom later this month. We like their sound, but we also admire their folksy/indie fashion sense.

ACL VISITS ROCCOS IN QUEENS

While to many fashiony guys these days, custom tailoring is something you do to a pair of overpriced denim, there is a certain element of guy who still opts for a custom made suit, or shirt. The personalized attention and impeccable fit you get is like nothing else. And while London's Savile Row and more recently, NYC's NoLIta features bespoke tailoring, real traditionalists opt to go to Rocco Cicciarelli Custom Tailoring, a men's suit factory in Queens. A Continuous Lean's Michael Williams visited and took tons of great photos. Read all about it here.
