FOOTWEAR: FEIYUE SHOES

We recently heard about Feiyue shoes (don't ask me how to pronounce it!) and we think they're going to be a big hit at the upcoming (capsule) show, January 22 & 23. THe term refers to an elevation of body & mind, according to Chinese tradition. Like the Converse of China, the brand has been around since the '20s and has been worn by everyone from pro soccer players to Shaolin masters.

Centered around the themes of Media, Environment, Design, Technology, Design, Mobility, Culture, Business, Money, and Health, GOOD Magazine and Openhouse have launched GOOD December, a pop-up community center and gallery store that just opened today. Visitors can look forward to making their own wrapping paper, exchanging books, donating clothing and cell phones, playing music and shuffleboard, and hanging out in the Wi-Fi cafe. Workshops, events, and sales will take place at the pop-up center for the next two weeks.  (VIA core77)

NEWS: 'TIS THE SEASON FOR CHARITY

Giving charity, rather than gifts seems to be quite in vogue this season. At BPMW, we asked each of our clients to donate to charity this season instead of sending gifts to the editors we work with. And Style.com is launching a new video that features 15 top designers, retailers, models, and other fashion insiders discussing their favorite charities (from OrphanAid Africa to Riverkeeper to TeachersCount) and why they feel it's important to be generous at this time of year.
Click here to see the video and to see how you can get involved with the charities mention in the clip.

MARKETING: GOBE TO LAUNCH EMOTIONAL BRANDING

Today's WWD reports that Marc Gobé, a champion of the role emotions play in the design and marketing of brands, is leaving his chairman post at his company, brand image maker Desgrippes Gobe to out on his own to open his own consulting firm, called Emotional Branding. Gobe has written a book with the same title. Gobé, whose marketing clients have ranged from Coca-Cola and Gillette, to Brooks Brothers, Victoria's Secret and Ann Taylor, will exit Desgrippes Gobé on Dec. 31. A believer in the notion that half of a brand's image stems from its visual identity, Gobé said he will "help top companies understand the various parts of the design process and how to leverage it."  If you're a subscriber to WWD you can read the full story here.

RETAIL: ACTUALLY, SINGAPORE

According to TimeOut Singapore, the go-to shop for chic street fashion is actually... Actually. No, really, that's the name. The boutique is stocked with a wide range of international designs including UK, Thai, Australian, and American labels. Read more about the one of a kind boutique after the jump.

Inside this trendy shop, hard to get pieces float eerily feet above the floor on claw-footed tables or in ivory drawers. The furniture seems to protrude of their own accord from the stark brick walls, while chairs dangling from the wire-covered ceiling provide ample hanging room for other items. The haunted house look of the boutique alone is enough to attract tourists and natives alike to venture in for a closer look, not to mention the exclusive items from premium designers like K Karl Lagerfeld and Freitag that await inside.

Next time you're in Singapore, head over to check out the decor and pick up one of their cheeky shopping bags while you're at it - or cross your fingers that store owner Paul Khor will open up a sister shop for fans in the US!

BERNHARD WILLHELM S/S 2008

I simply adore European fashion! And when I say "European fashion," I assure you that I don't mean Chanel or Cavalli. I mean the wild, hipster brands that boutiques like (my fave) Seven on Mercer carry. One of those labels is Bernhard Willhelm; their crazy colors and wild silhouettes are always well executed and never blasé or cliché. But their Spring/ Summer 2008 collections for both men and women, straddle the line between crimes against fashion and crimes against humanity! Frankly, no man or woman should be given license to leave their home dressed like this, and we all know that some fashion lemming who "wants to be a non-conformist just like everybody else" is bound to do so.

(Posted by Virginia Jackson-Reed)

I mean, don't get me wrong, from an artistic standpoint, its great; very high-concept pieces, and styled differently (and perhaps with another model) it'd be visually enchanting. The collection has a motley assortment of things going on, though. It has a feeling of "circus-meets-pirate-meets-body builder-meets-wrestler-meets-club kid." I'm not sure about you, but I'm just not sure whether or not all of those different characters should ever meet. And while their men's look book is far too crazy for me to even lend justification to, a few pieces in the women's can be salvaged, I suppose.-(VJR)

What are your best selling classifications or trends right now?
There are currently two major trends which we are doing very well with right now. First and foremost is embellishment.  Product with studs, crystals, resin coating, embroidery and foil are really working well right now, but done in a clean way. At the same time we are experiencing a “back to the basics” look, with an eco-friendly twist! The Go-Green movement is in full force for Spring 2008.

What classifications or trends are you expecting to be big for fall 2008?
For fall we are anticipating a fusion of skate, street, and preppy looks. It’s a term we have coined, called “Neo-Urban”. We believe that with the downfall of the urban market, and the rise of design conscious street kids, “Neo-Urban” looks will distinguish a sophisticated dresser from the norm. Be prepared to see striped polos over graphic tees, cardigan sweaters finished off with leather jackets and tailored bottoms, with an edge… This classification is the love child of Punk and Hip Hop, an unlikely marriage that seems to be making a lot of noise in the market.

What are your best selling classifications or trends right now?
Well, as for right now I guess ill talk about spring 08. This spring we should expect the a cleansing of graphics and prints. We have seen all that we can see in t-shirts. Our minds are dizzy with graphics and our stomachs nauseated by the saturation of ideas and never ending launch of new brands. Spring 08 will be the time to revisit modesty. A clear canvas to begin with dabs of calculated color and clean construction lines. We will be seeing a lot more muted colors such as mint greens, carnation pinks, and kona popped with corals and blues ranging from aqua to azure. We will begin to notice the reintroduction of color blocking which will carry us into the fall of 08.

What classifications or trends are you expecting to be big for fall 2008?

We anticipate fall will be about color and geometry. Taking it back to the moms and grandmom’s with the color coordination rules and jazzing it up with an interruption of unexpected colors added. The palette will be rich but sophisticated. Black is still black but color will take precedence. There will definitely be a strong reference to the 60’s but the we will feel some 70’s and 90’s as well. Definitely no 80’S! We had to kick them out for now. From the yellow/orange spectrum we will see colors like orange-red, mustard, amber, and pear, olive and lemon. Cobalt blue and red-violet will be great accent colors. Eggplant will be good too. But one last thing to remember is the PINE green. This color will will definitely compete very strongly with black. It may very well well replace the black stockings or bag, so pay attention cause its very subtle and appears black in low light. For a full f08 trend forecast check in with www.cyanatrendland.com in the next 2 weeks. We have shot the f08 editorial forecast and are preparing to release it these days.

BANKSY DOES NEW YORK

There's something very American about giving the middle finger to the law. After all, the Puritans came here to escape religious persecution, and (in Great Brittain's eyes) our founding fathers were, for all intents and purposes, treasoness terrorists. Ah, God bless America! As for Banksy, I'm not really sure what his deal is. He's a Brit. The only rebellion I associate them with is Punk rock-- which is valid, I suppose.

(Posted By Virginia Jackson-Reed)

But in all seriousness, Banksy has got to be the "James Bond of Street Art." From sneaking a life-size replica of a Guantanamo Bay detainee into Disneyland, to swapping Paris Hilton cd jackets with 500 "doctored" ones in an HMV, to smuggling his work into the MET and the MoMA, (all in broad daylight,) Banksy's social commentary and apparent elusivity make him all the more intriguing.

His show at the Vanina Holasek Gallery in Chelsea opened this past Sunday and is running until the 29th of this month. The show is free. Of course, it would, likewise, cost you nothing to roam Soho trying to spot one of his pieces, but then who would want to do that in this frigid weather?-(VJR)

He's also doing a show in Bethlehem, but that's something I refuse to comment on altogether.

RETAIL: PUSHING ENVELOPES

A new frontier in the worlds of luxury (and luxury trappings) is the receipt package—a precious little envelope to carry your carefully folded proof of purchase. Borrowed from those connoisseurs of all things shopping and packaging, the Japanese, the conspicuously tiny envelope is in circulation at stores including J. Crew, Phillip Lim, Diesel, Louis Vuitton, Marni and Calvin Klein.... Of course, the amenity has its practical purposes. As Diesel’s envelope puts it: “A token of our time spent together… And a keepsake for a change of heart.” (excerpt from The Moment)

MEDIA: A NEW FASHION MOMENT

The NY Times style magazine, T has long been one of our favorite publications that existed without a blog...until now. The magazine has launched a new online presence, called The Moment, which will add a daily dose of fashion insidery tidbits that so far have proven to be a great read and a fresh perspective on fashion and its peripheral scenes. This week Proenza Schouler's Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough interview some of their friends in the biz in a series of daily posts, and there's a sneak preview of the New Museum downtown (from before it opened!).  Check it out when you have a moment! You'll be glad you did!

BRANDS WE LOVE: DAVID DAVID

I often find that some of the greatest things in life we happen upon mistakenly; Penicilin was discovered from everday bread mold, and fashionistas often gush over treasures they've found in quaint little shops on trips to Europe. This is a bit like the way I discovered Brit label David David (well, a bit less campy of a tale). I was flipping through the current issue of Missbehave sometime in late September or early October. I had purchased it not only because M.I.A. was the cover girl, but also because Missbehave is just a great mag! Well, to make a long story short, she had on a pair of David David leggings, and I've been in love ever since.

(Posted by Virginia Jackson-Reed)

While the brightly colored leggings and dizzying patterns that were ever-so popular during the past few seasons are beginning to wane in their popularity, I'll always have a soft spot for the edgy and offbeat; coming from the girl who grew up wanting to take her sequins and marabou from dress-up time to school time, I'll always appreciate a little punch of color here and there. But don't get me wrong, the look is far more tailored than what you might expect when "brightly colored" and "Brit" are mentioned in the same breath. The calculated, geometric prints, juxtaposed with the clean lines make for a nice contrast that is refreshingly more grown-up than a lot of the European fashions du jour. But alas, that's their Spring/ Summer 2008 collection. And although the winter isn't even here yet, I'm more than anxious for the warm weather to resurface looking at what they have in store.-- (VJR)

BRANDS WE LOVE: NOSSA

NossaWhen I think of Brazil, I rarely think of fashion; unless I'm speaking of Giselle, Havianas, or thongs, there really isn't much for me to think of. What I do usually think of is music. Being a fan of Samba, Batucada and Baile Funk, I tend to think of warm, sunny days on Impanema Beach-- and the mellow tunes of Astrud Gilberto and Sergio Mendes. Perhaps that's the reason I took notice of Brazilian-influenced label Nossa, whose designers are also well-known Baile Funk DJs; both their line and music are about as cool as a Caipirinha on a hot day.

(Posted by Virginia Jackson-Reed)

Having been profiled in magazines like Trace, BPM and Beautiful Decay, duo Nossa (or Sujinho and Cassiano) have made waves on the music scene for being major proponents of the Baile Funk scene, along with DJs like Diplo. Now, with their streetwear label, they intend to prove that they're no "One Trick Ponies." Drawing inspiration from Brazil and the rest of the Third World, each shirt is not only visually intriguing, but has a message as well. Be sure to check out their new website and check out the rest of the collection! -VJR

FUN & RANDOM: POLANOIDS UNITE!

The fashion industry and Polaroid film have always gone hand in hand. I can't imagine a fashion photo shoot without the anticipation of  the slow developing square-shaped photos that best "cook" when placed in one's armpit. Even in the age of digital photography, there's still a segment of our market that swears by Polaroid cameras for everything from castings, to runway assignments. Polaroid is trying to keep Polaroid's cool factor up with Polanoid—a web site for Polaroid lovers that's out to build the biggest Polaroid picture collection on the planet by asking instant-picture enthusiasts around the world to register and upload pictures for free. Check out their site where you can search their huge archive of pictures based on the many different formats of Polaroid film and cameras. The site can end up being a cool art project or a voyeur's dream, or a little but of both. As the web site proclaims, "This is the slamming comeback of Instant Photo Fun." (via coolhunting)

DESIGNER TO WATCH: P O U R

Lately, Swedish designers have been taking the fashion world by storm and POUR is no exception. The line, created in 2001 by designer Robert Berggren, is inspired by icons of the Beatnik Generation like Jack Kerouac and Patti Smith. With edgy remakes of classic pieces like thick knits and toggle coats, the line continuously showcases effortlessly cool pieces that unrestricted by fleeting trends. The Winter 07 line for women features oversized sweaters and relaxed fit bottoms for a bohemian feel, while the men's line is composed of shockingly dark separates with luxurious mixing of texture and fabric. Since becoming recognized as a high quality mainstream label in Europe, POUR has reached out to other parts of the world such as Australia and Tokyo. Until they make it over to the States, find select pieces at trendy online boutiques like 111Vox.

RETAIL: MORE INFO ON TOPSHOP'S NYC DEBUT

As reported in WWD, Topshop is definitely opening in NYC in September. "When the fast-fashion British retailer unveils the first Topshop/Topman unit in Manhattan in September, it will sound the opening shot in an ambitious plan to build an America-wide — and global — brand. In an exclusive interview with WWD, Topshop's owner, Sir Philip Green, said he is planning two more Manhattan stores, as well as flagships on the West Coast, and other units in cities including Las Vegas, Miami and Boston. But Green wants to give as well as receive: In addition to building an American leg to his retail business, he hopes to find young American design talent to sustain and support in the vein of Topshop's New Generation program. In London each season, Topshop sponsors the shows and collections of a clutch of young designers. Those names — which have included Preen, Marios Schwab, Christopher Kane and Emma Cook — have then gone on to create exclusive collections for Topshop." We cant wait.  Read the full story on WWD here, (subscription required)
