RETAIL: NEW HIGH (M)ART- POPS UP RETAIL IN LA

LA's getting a dose of really cool pop up retail in Chinatown, in a new teeny weeny store called New High (M)art. The 300-square-foot storefront will offer a revolving door concept shop and will present a series of designer pop-up stores, guest buyer/curator mini-boutiques and thematic retail moments where the only thing permanent will be change. LA designer Brian Lichtenberg will be the firdst featured designer.

More after the jump!

In addition to his industry-wide recognition as a pioneer of the unisex revolution, those closest to Lichtenberg revere him for his spontaneous one-off pieces and "where-does-he-find-these?" collection of sourced accoutrements, deadstock and other fashion "secret weapons" that anyone would die to own. New High (M)art gives the public the chance to do just that. Lichtenberg will round out his pop-up store with any and all objects d'fashion he can be persuaded to part with. Expect nothing short of amazing-ness.

Co-owners Miho Ikeda and T-RIK conceived of New High (M)art as a response to the stale business model that often plagues boutiques today. Their solution: create a small easy-to-manage environment that allows a single designer, brand or idea to be fully explored, realized and merchandised one fleeting store-op at a time.

"The value of today's designer no longer simply resides in the lines they create season-to-season, but in every artifact of their personal taste" says T-RIK, whose background includes wardrobe styling, creative direction, and brand consulting. "This could be anything from a piece that didn't make it in a collection, the music they listen to, a photograph they've taken or the results of a shopping trip to Marrakesh. New High (M)art looks forward to sharing this other side with the public as well."

BOOM BOOM TEE BY NO MAS

Ray ‘Boom Boom’ Mancini is the Italian American fighter famous for his relentless fighting style.  As Mancini climbed boxing’s ranks in the late seventies and early eighties, the American fight public fell in love with the kid from Youngstown, Ohio.  His family history, his whirlwind of punches and his ability to both dish out and take massive punishment all conspired to make one of the most telegenic fighters of his era. His image is now the subject of a T-shirt from the Pantheon collection by NO MAS.

More after the jump.

NO MAS designs have historically been about the intersection between sports and culture, and this collection is no exception. And the athlete actually receives a percentage of sales. The Pantheon collection is designed to look and feel like the vintage shirt it was modeled after.  Designer Chris Isenberg drew inspiration for the Pantheon collection from 1970’s boxing images and is introducing, for the first time, a slimmer cut, light weight t-shirt with faded graphics.

HOT SHOE: COLORWAYS BY PIERRE HARDY

Frenchman Pierre Hardy is already known for his outré dress shoes and boots, but frankly we didn't see this coming: Colorama, a limited-edition new sneaker wherein every part of the shoe is made from a different color. The kicks, available in a run of 500, should make matching either a breeze or a nightmare—or a little of each—and will be available this week from Barneys.

RETAIL: CUTDROP

If you’re a brand rep sitting on some old merch, we've found a new offprice web site that specializes in streetwear brands and offers kids who want to look cool without breaking the bank a great new place to shop.  Cutdrop.com offers all the streetwear brands we love at discounted prices. The site is an off price merchant—think Urban Outfitters meets Bluefly—or something along those lines. CutDrop just launched last month and already offers brands like Le Tigre, Klovis, Brown Sound, Boxfresh and Scifen. The brand list is growing every day. “The youth consumer wants to spend its money on clothing that helps to create an image that sets them apart from their peers. By offering last season’s goods Cutdrop.com makes being ‘set apart’ easier—and less expensive. As a marketing person I would like to see my brand hit its market 100% of the time and with each and every garment…past or present. The streetwear industry is missing this type of outlet. We still hit our target market and avoid the option of resorting to general discount stores.” says marketing director and co-founder Neil Jackson. Check it out now!

CATOR SPARKS GETS HIS SNEAK ON AT THE CLAW MONEY VANDAL LAUNCH AT I-HEART

Former graffiti artist and now fashion designer, Swindle editor and general troublemaker, Claw Money launched her Nike Vandal hi-top—based on the classic 1985 hoop shoe—last night with a party at I Heart store on Mott Street. Nike asks artists to collaborate on limited-edition kicks regularly, but this is the first time a woman has been enlisted. Claw told me that when she was offered the opportunity, she immediately chose the Vandal because it is one of her favorite styles, but she could never find it in her petite size. Now femme sneaker heads worldwide can rejoice!

More after the jump.

 (via Hintmag)

While streetwear isn't my forte, nor do I own a pair of sneakers, Claw said her inspiration was none other than my favorite designer, Vivienne Westwood. She saw her interviewed once and Vivienne quipped, “Some people are regular birds in a flock and others are peacocks strutting their stuff.” Hence the peacock-feather print.

The party was poppin’ by 9 pm, when the door lady had to turn people away. Luckily I knew said door lady and snuck in. The crowd was an amusing variety of girls in skinny jeans and random neon accessories, and boys in Supreme caps (I didn’t get the memo). I met fashion photographer Danielle Levitt, a dear friend of Claw’s who was feeling the peacock motif with a colorful kimono frock and swilled with Kelly McCabe from Complex, singer Terra Deva and a bevy of Claw's gal pals.

The Vandals retail for $150 and are sold exclusively at I Heart until October 27, when they will be found in tier zero Nike stores nationwide. What does tier zero mean? If you don’t know, you won't be buying a pair anyway.

RE*Generation Artist: Daniel Davidson

I like how artist Daniel Davidson is thinking with his acrylic on panel "Peace III." Who doesn't want to spread the message of peace - especially when doing so helps youth without homes? Up the current online bid price now (bidding ends in about a week!) and then head over to the live RE*Generation auction on November 7 to solidify your win!

FREEMANS' FIRST LINE OF JEANS

Guys could spend a whole day with Freemans, starting at the Freemans Sporting Club boutique for fine-crafted menswear, then upstairs for a shave, and to the restaurant around the corner for a hearty meal (soon there will even be a bar by the owner in the West Village!). And now, if you can believe it, there is yet another reason to rush to Freemans: the debut of their first line of mens denim with only about 100 pairs made! The jeans are available only at the store, while supplies last, for $200 - and I'm sure, like everything else, they're impeccably made. It's almost the holidays... why not treat yourself?

MUST HAVE: 410BC GRAPHIC TS

Remember witty and sarcastic Daria Morgendorffer from the MTV cartoon? If you were as obsessed with her as I was, you might fall in love with the clever graphic Ts from 410BC! Victoria, one of the brains behind the line, lists Daria as a source of inspiration behind the wry, vibrant T-shirt designs. Find out other fun facts about the brand after the jump -- and then head over to the online shop to snatch up one of their best sellers or, my favorite, the "Faux Pas" shirt (how Quinn!).

photos by 410BC

1. How was 410BC created?
410 BC started over a year ago by a group of friends and artists. We began designing together for fun. That mentality is still very much alive for us. Having fun while running a company is not ubiquitous, but we see it as being extremely important. We’re not an average company because of our ages, backgrounds and interests, but our diversity has proven to be a good thing.

2. What is your inspiration for designs?
Our inspirations come from everyday life. If one of us sees something that we would want to turn into a design, we’ll make it happen. Our most recent inspirations include: science fiction, pop art and contemporary art, teen culture of the 80’s and 90’s, old horror films, Daria Morgendorffer, Joseph Szabo photographs, and Franz Kafka novels.

3. What are current top sellers?
Our “Roid Rage” and “Molars” shirts (both $28 and pictured).

4. What are your favorite trends?
Bold colors, streetwear and art as clothing.

5. Where are you sold?
We mostly sell through our website (http://www.410bc.com). We are also sold at a boutique called Unite (http://www.unitefootwear.com) and The Mission Indie Mart in San Francisco.

6. Describe a typical business day.
Every day, we wake up and go to the post office to mail out orders from the night before. We also have to answer a lot of e-mails. We try to work on new designs every day as well. We usually work on designs at night while blasting music and eating food.

7. How do 410 BC’s designs reflect the personalities of the company and of the designers?
Some of the designs are very stylized and graphic, while others look like line drawings done by hand. We all design in different ways, which is why the shirts are diverse and there’s something for everyone. I think as a whole the designs have a personality that reflects 410 BC.

8. What are your future plans for the line?
We hope to branch out and have our designs more readily available to people through other stores. We also have many new designs underway and some limited edition shirts that incorporate photography.

DESIGNER TO WATCH: A-Z

Although the name is impossible to Google, the simple and casual menswear label A-Z has caught the eyes of many in its debut year. The designs would have been especially useful over the weekend. In New York, the weather was dreary, wet, and cold - a perfect time to break out the comfy yet sleek weatherproof garb from A-Z! Constructed from nylon into classic shapes like ponchos and zip-up hoodies, the pieces are easy and wearable. Designer Dana Lee also offers more staples like long merino wool underwear, classic chinos, and T's and tanks.
Read more about the line at Refinery29.

A-Z is available in New York at Bblessing, 181 Orchard Street; 212-378-8005, and in Los Angeles at Scout, 7920 West 3rd Street; 323-658-8684. For spring, A-Z will also be sold in Opening Ceremony's New York and Los Angeles locations.

M.I.A. AT TERMINAL 5

After a series of visa and censorship issues, M.I.A. made her way back to N.Y.C. for the second time in years for her October 18th show at Terminal 5 last Thursday (preceding her October 19th CMJ show). Though the show was AMAZING, some may argue that it wasn't worth the wait (and trust me, there was quite a wait.)

The dj who spun tracks by everyone from Justice to Elephant Man was able to keep the crowd moving for hours-- literally. Although the doors were supposed to open at 7:00 and opened about twenty minutes after, the opening act wasn't slated to come on until 10:00. The problem? Many fans were already growing irate by 8:30. So when new-comer Rye-Rye (a Baltimore-based, Lil' Mama wannabe) came on, she was met with much opposition-- oh and a lot of jeering. M.I.A.'s  protégé, Afrikan Boy attempted to assuage the crowd, but this was a vain attempt.

Posted by Virginia Jackson-Reed

(more after the jump)

Eventually the clock struck 10:30, the lights dimmed, and a short, subtitled video of a speech made by Japanese nihilist, anarchist, governornal candidate, Kouichi Touyama. A few of my fellow concert goers were a bit worried that the F.B.I. might have been listening the entire time. Then, it was finally time for M.I.A. to take the stage. The fans, some just very excited, others, wasted on over-priced drinks roared with applause. The wait was finally over.

The ever-flamboyant Brit stepped on stage with a sky blue, sequin, cut-out dress, a funky pair of legging, metallic Converse kicks-- and literally a feather in her cap. She was perhaps even more beautiful and commanding in person, in spite of her small stature. The show was very high-voltage. She shimmied and shook about as her hype girl (who also sings the hook for "Sunshowers") assisted in keeping the crowd pumped. She performed nearly all of the tracks from both albums, including her debut "Galang." The three most notable parts of the show? The first time she crowd surfed, the second time she crowd surfed, and of course, her letting the fans bum-rush the stage! Granted, a few really wasted fans and their constant pushing caused a bit of aggravation for the rest of us, but overall, quite the amazing show. Let's just hope she doesn't have any more visa issues so we can do this again sometime soon. (VJ-R)

Sexy lingerie company Agent Provocateur has put out a retro-femme catalog that we thought you'd love. Just click on the image at the left to see the whole book, called Knickers Forever. House 33, the graphic design house turned clothing brand has collaborated with AP to design a new logo and a limited edition derriere shaped book that tells the story of the collaboration. They will be available here for $100 for the set.

WATCH OUT FOR FRESHJIVE JABS!

Freshjive's Spring '08 collection includes powerful messages directed to the stars of the tabloids. Among camo print hoodies and homage to LA hats, there are not-so-subtle jabs at our beloved Hollywood partygoers. My favorites are the mens and womens "Pop Will Kill Itself" and "Blank Generation" t-shirts, complete with photos (no mugshots) of the infamous women themselves. It seems Karl Lagerfeld isn't the only one taking inspiration from the turbulent lives of the young and famous these days!

REQUIRED READING: FUJIWARA DISSES NIGO

The November issue of Conde Nast Portfolio magazine is stirring up some major beef in the streetwear scene. Just read this! "It is ironic that Bape is the most successful brand to emerge from the Urahara movement; indeed, it’s the only Urahara brand with international reach. But to many who came of age in that scene, Nigo has betrayed its values of craftsmanship, exclusivity, and countercultural style. 'He’s become a joke,' says one competitor. Fujiwara, who is still revered in Tokyo as perhaps the one man who can launch a trend, is even more dismissive of Nigo. 'I just wonder how he feels when he sees ugly people wearing his clothes. If you go to the countryside in America and people are wearing Bathing Ape, that’s not very cool.' Fujiwara, now a consultant for Nike and Levi’s, shrugs. 'I thought he was more like us, but he changed.'" Read the rest of the story here.

OH SNAP! A-RON GETS SUED

A-Ron the Don has some major legal issues. Read the full story from Complex.com. "Last week we mentioned that A-Ron was suing his own company for trademark infringement and now the legal drama surrounding the aNYthing case continues to bubble over as we just received word that silver spooner Kiernan Costello—current controversial owner of aNYthing—is now countersuing A-Ron for the humongous sum of $5 million. No, seriously, that’s a five with six zeros. The suit basically alleges that the “Don” broke all sorts of contractual agreements when things went south. The document is 40 pages long and discusses everything about the case and its far reaching implications even mentioning: retail accounts (Situation Normal, Union, Goods, etc..), websites like Splay, rock band The Virgins, the 205 Club, and a whole cast of characters and interesting tidbits. We poured through the massive document—which BTW, is a great case study for streetwear brands and entrepreneurs in general—and pulled out the highlights of the case and present them, just how you like it, in snippet form..." See it here.

“Magical Dimensions,” the party-inspired Holiday ’07 collection, will dress you up for any party downtown. The collection is a little more subdued than the bold Spring collection, but still manages to incorporate Rojas’ signature geometric prints, great fabrics, and interesting twist on classic items. Featuring cumberbunds, tuxedos, bowties, and wingtip shoes all in patent leather, shiny metallic, and glitter, this collection is sure to bring life to any party.
