We just discovered a new Dutch magazine-- B612. If you ever took French, you may know that the title refers name of the asteroid on which the little prince, the main character of the book Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, lives. His mini-planet is a condensed, simplified universe that represents the complex reality of the real world. Fashion and style are cultural phenomena that spring from developments in society at large. Everybody knows the expression that when the economy blooms, skirts get shorter. But there are a thousand more ways in which the way people dress and groom are representations of bigger societal trends. Therefore looking at fashion can reveal aspects of society at large. Just like Saint-Exupery wanted to say something about the state of the world through the means of a fairy tale about a little prince, B612 intends to show trends in society by looking at fashion. The goal of the magazine is to report on what the editors believe is interesting right now, but it does leave room for the readers themselves to interpret what it could represent. Each issue will have a different theme, focusing on a different trend. The theme will have its impact on the design, format and presentation.
