HOT BRAND: PUBLIC SCHOOL IS IN SESSION

Public school is supposed to inspire young minds to achieve great things, but the NYC Public School system also inspired great style. Public School is a new menswear collection designed by Miami's tastemaker boutique Arrive owner Dao Yi Chow and Max Osbourne,  The collection was inspired by the two men's upbringing in the NYC public school system. The pieces are both sophisticated, and edgy, and cut from high quality fabrics. Details include graphic motifs like a feather and a sword, reflecting a desire to look tough and cerebral at the same time.

We've got photos from a recent photoshoot after the jump.

Public School is an ode to New York City, taking inspiration from the nostalgia of its history and the attitude of its inhabitants. Having renamed New York City as the Black Apple, PS is continually driven by the energy and creative force of the Black Apple. Public School captures the time of lost innocence and rebellion of the city's youth and combines them into a new movement.

The brand's manifesto is all about rebellion: "Rebellion. It’s at the heart of every cultural movement. It’s the force behind change, helping to sway the power from the status quo. In constant action against the expected, we hold a pen in one hand and a sword in the other, critiquing the culture we help create, stripping the emperor of his clothes and dressing the new guard. Welcome to PUBLIC SCHOOLprepare for the re-education."

PS combines smartly tailored pieces with elements of the street. We love the design elements that incorporate the pen and the sword on fleece hoodies and dark wash jeans, there's also an amazing leather vest with a built in fleece hoodie and a tailored military officer's jacket with rock and roll stud detailing at the waist. A polo has a cropped collar that is made to be worn flipped up.

Public School made its debut at the (capsule) show, July 23 in NYC.

CASSETTE'S PETER JAMES LEE REPORTS FROM NYC

This week in New York many brands launched their new spring 2008 collections. There were at least four major trade shows going on in the city. A fashion week of sorts.. Cassette participated in a brand new show called capsule, put together by BPMW. The girls at BPMW wanted to present to the public an edited 40+ brands. A “best of the best” to buyers. The show was located in an old synagogue in the Lower East Side. From when the doors opened at 10am Monday morning the positive energy was truly inspiring. It was to buyers what a hidden hard to find store is to customers.. To be a part of the first capsule show was magical, the people, the energy, the positivity, the conversations, and the good times.

Check out Peter's blog here.

TOM JULIAN REPORTS FROM (CAPSULE)

Tom Julian, SVP and Director of Trends for global ad agency McCann Erickson, shares his marketing thoughts and spring ’08 views on (capsule).  He’s been watching the men’s apparel world for the past two decades and is regularly quoted by the media. In part 1 of a 2 part series, we’ve got his thoughts on the show, and the menswear market after the jump.

The third week of July has always been an exciting and opportune time for the men’s market to “talk and shop spring” for the following year here in New York City.  It’s also ideal since there’s a bit of a break with the between Pitti Uomo trade event in Florence and the runway collections in Milan and Paris.  During the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, there were periods of time during hot July days that the industry would be showing the best of collections on  runways, in showrooms…or new designers and brands would launch products in unsuspecting ways (with auto companies, electronic toys and more).  And for the common good of the industry, there were charity programs and events to raise our consciousness.

Fast forward into the new millennium and for one reason or another, trade shows became the simple solution for marketing a look or label and one downside emerged – trade shows became more about real estate and less about servicing the retailer.  No wonder the first-time labels can’t catch a break, get exposure or grab a fare share of the buyer’s wallet!

Summer 2007 and enter the first edition of (capsule)…

First, a few show stats from the show producers:  a global view of 48 companies an attendance of 700+ from the retail world and 150 from the media world.  This is just one man’s view but to get off the beaten retail path is a refreshing and sometimes an exhilarating experience.  (capsule) proved that small is good, quality is king and that two days are best for the focused and sharp global mind!
So, fast forward a week later…after a few strolls throughout the various trade events last week and what was my trend view of this changing marketplace?   That change is good and welcomed!  That marketing and branding is better especially when one can see and appreciate it up close.  That those with a bright future have a historical and social view – and are worth putting front and center!

Catch part 2 of Tom's report tomorrow.

BRAND TO WATCH: BARKING IRONS SS08 COLLECTION

Barking Irons debuted its SS08 collection at the (capsule) show and we love the way the brand has evolved from just graphic  T-shirts to a full collection. Taking inspirations from one of NYC's most colorful and rebellious personalities, Walt Whitman, the collection incorporates Whitman's poetry into the graphics, while updating elements of late 19th century fashion pieces into a thoroughly modern collection. Fabrics are soft, washed and faded, while graphics reflect a bygone era. We've got more pics after the jump.

BRAND TO WATCH: OAK

Oak is more than just one of Brooklyn's coolest boutiques, carrying brands like 3.1 Philip Lim, Generra and Tom's Shoes. The guys behind the shop have also launched a small collection of great menswear basics. The spring summer 2008 collection was shown at the (capsule) show last week. If you didn't make it to the show, we've got a link to the lookbook here.

ACCESSORIES: SUPER SUNGLASSES

They're called Super sunglasses, but these Hhand-made Italian specs can also be called Amazing, Awesome and Extremely Cool sunglasses. Super, which is a product of the team behind the Italian fashion mag Pig, essentially updates the classic Wayfarer frame with Zeiss lenses and a gold plated brand stamp in the inside of the arm. They come in a rainbow of colors for fall, and for spring, black and white stripes and a cool clear frame are also available, as well as two- tone styles that feature arms that are a different color from the frame itself.

Super made its US debut at the (capsule) show last week, and we loved meeting founder Daniel Beckerman and his cute assistant who wore amazing glam face makeup. Super has been all over the blogs ever since the show. See what they all had to say after the jump!

NEWS: MICHAEL BASTIAN TO DESIGN BILL BLASS MENSWEAR

Michael Bastian is stepping into Bill Blass Ltd. as creative director for men’s wear, a position that hasn’t existed at the storied American house since 1987DNR reports. The move reflects plans by NexCen Brands Inc., which bought the label in December for $54.6 million, to relaunch men’s sportswear and tailored clothing for fall 2008. Bastian will oversee design of all licensed and wholly owned men’s wear categories, which will later include fragrance. The former fashion director of Bergdorf Goodman Men, who became a designer in 2006, will continue to design his eponymous label.  (via DNR) We've also learned from WWD that designer Peter Som was named creative director of women's. Som is no stranger to the house. In the mid-Nineties, he became a Blass protégé, working closely with him as his design assistant. In fact, when Blass was unable to attend the Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, he asked Som to accept in his place. Blass died in 2002.(WWD)

KEY ITEM: MACK ATTACK- THE CLASSIC COAT GETS AN UPDATE

Iconic Scottish brand Mackintosh has teamed up with the designers of the Australian label Rittenhouse to create a modern take on the classic trench coat. While the inegrity of the classic Mack is preserved, it's cleverly updated with a bit of Rittenhouse's signature graphics. The rubberized cotton coat features a detachable wool-flannel lining which features Rittenhouse's signature "checkers" design.  (via Coolhunting)

MAGAZINE NEWS: B612

We just discovered a new Dutch magazine-- B612. If you ever took French, you may know that the title refers name of the asteroid on which the little prince, the main character of the book Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, lives. His mini-planet is a condensed, simplified universe that represents the complex reality of the real world. Fashion and style are cultural phenomena that spring from developments in society at large. Everybody knows the expression that when the economy blooms, skirts get shorter. But there are a thousand more ways in which the way people dress and groom are representations of bigger societal trends. Therefore looking at fashion can reveal aspects of society at large. Just like Saint-Exupery wanted to say something about the state of the world through the means of a fairy tale about a little prince, B612 intends to show trends in society by looking at fashion. The goal of the magazine is to report on what the editors believe is interesting right now, but it does leave room for the readers themselves to interpret what it could represent. Each issue will have a different theme, focusing on a different trend. The theme will have its impact on the design, format and presentation. That's DEEP.The theme of issue nr 1 is LOVELY CREATURES, what refers to animals in fashion. Get it while it's hot!

(capsule) WAS GREAT!

Wow! The first ever (capsule) show took place on Monday and Tuesday, July 23 & 24 at the Angel Orensanz Center in NYC and we've been hearing nothing but praise for the show. We invited 50 of the world's coolest independent menswear designers to preview their ss2008 collections at (capsule), and no one was disappointed. Despite monsoon conditions on Monday, hundreds of the world's most respected buyers and journalists came to the show, and even more came through on Tuesday. It was so much fun, Damien Nunes, fashion editor at GQ said he wished (capsule) could happen nevery day. We do too. The energy in the room was amazing as we started to build a community of likeminded designers, stores and editors at the show. Thank you all for your support! And thanks again to our sponsors. (capsule) set a new standard for tradeshows. But don't just take my word for it, check out what Refinery29 and men.style.com had to say!

KEY ACCESSORY: THE NON-PLASTIC SHOPPER

Apparently, sustainability is no longer just a concern of the Greenpeace, tree-hugging, hippy set; Stella McCartney’s super-luxe, bespoke line is one hundred percent  animal friendly (as she doesn’t use fur or leather.) She’s even developing an organic skincare line. Swedish cult fave Cheap Monday uses recycled paper for the their tags and pocket linings, and British designer Katharine Hamnett’s famed, morally-conscious slogan tees are made with organic cotton. With a brand new Whole Foods smack-dab in the middle of Union Square, it would seem that vegan has become the new Kabbalah.

If you subscribe to this sort of fashion, keep reading after the jump- we've got info on this season's hottest, and most socially responsible accessory, pictured here, making its NY debut this week.

Fortunately, for those of us more willing to support Gore’s agenda than Bush’s, this recent advent of what has been affectionately dubbed “sustainable-chic” caters to both your inner hippy, and “Park Avenue Princess.” This Wednesday, I’d advise you put on a pair of your comfiest kicks and prepare to stand on a line that will perhaps—in size, rival those of last December’s PS3 launch; Anya Hindmarch’s “I’m Not a Plastic Bag” will make its final US debut at select tri-state Whole Foods Market stores (for a full stock list click here.) The reusable shopping bag was Hindmarch’s effort to quell the use of plastic bags (since they’re non-biodegradable.) With a $15 price tag, a designer name, celebrity following (Model Lily Cole and actress Keira Knightley have both been spotted toting the carryall,) the limited edition bag is sure to be follow the precedent set by its previous launches. RETAIL: DUTIL DENIM

Stateside, it becomes very easy to forget our friendly neighbor to the north. As far as contributions to fashion are concerned, the whole "mountain-ranger chic" look never really caught on. And while we all know  there's no place like New York, (I myself being slightly prejudiced, of course) Toronto and Vancouver are like the NY and LA of the North; filled with hip boutiques housing the brands that have become mainstays in the closets of many a style maven. Vancouver's Dutil Denim is one of those shops, offering a variety of refined sportswear and upscale streetwear labels for both men and women like Acne, Julian Red and opening Ceremony.

(Dutil is having a mega sale this weekend... more after the jump.)

In the short year and a half following its opening, the Cordova Street shop has developed quite a buzz. Stop in for timelessly chic pieces from A.P.C, or denim from brands like über-trendy Acne. Whether you’re an international tastemaker or are just content impersonating one, you’ll be hard pressed to leave the store empty handed. So don’t forget to check this shop next time you’re in town. After all, it is British Columbia; looking chic and leaving your fake id behind (the legal drinking age there is 18)—now that’s killing two birds with one stone! (Virginia Reed-Jackson)

Brian: What are you doing?
Sean: I’m about to
