As Executive Editor of
men.style.com, Tyler Thoreson has covered it all- from the men's fashion shows around the world, to the best stores, cars, gadgets, and gear. Always on top of the trends, Tyler makes it his business to know what's up. He jokes that his vast knowledge is all superficial, but we love to read about what he feels is cool now. So what's inspiring Tyler? We've got a Q&A after the jump.
What are you currently obsessed with and why?
I’m not sure I would qualify as being truly obsessed with anything (excepting, of course my collection of Hummel figurines, though that’s really more of a clinical addiction). I actually try to keep things in perspective and not get too fixated on any one thing or trend, in no small part because my job demands it. MEN.STYLE.COM covers so many things—runway and retail fashion, gadgets and gear, travel, nightlife, pop culture—that I really need to know a little about a lot. It’s sort of an inch deep and mile wide mentality, with one key distinction: I pride myself on being more like two-and-a-half to three inches deep. That, in fact, may well be my obsession: concealing how superficial my knowledge really is. Of course, in New York City circa 2007 I feel like I’m in good company in that department.
What do you think will be a big trend in fashion or lifestyle next season and why ?
On a larger level, I think the coming season will be dominated by a maturation of trends that have emerged over the past couple seasons. Men’s tailoring will continue to extend its tentacles into the mass market. Same goes for the whole “trading up” phenomenon, (Loro Piana cashmere at J.Crew, etc.). On a more specific level, expect to see high-tech fabrics everywhere, some with an eco-conscious bent, some high-tech just for their own sake. Finally, of course, you’ve got the whole après ski thing—chalet chic or whatever you want to call it. That was all over the place, from Michael Bastian’s extremely polished Fall collection to what Frida Giannini did for Gucci.
