BRAND TO WATCH: FREMONT APPAREL CO

Fremont takes its inspiration from vintage fashions and the Me Decade. The era where Palm Springs and Las Vegas was Hollywood’s playground and stars were paving the way for this lavish lifestyle. Fabulous pool parties, martini brunches, and all that defines early resorts helped shape the collection. The fashions during that time reflected a certain indulgence. The leisure suit was born and women would never opt to wear a regular pair of jeans for a night out on the town. Fremont endorses a lifestyle of martinis, lounge acts, piano pools, and dinner parties. Silhouettes are reminiscent of vintage fashions from back in the day

COUNTDOWN TO KATE

THEY HAD A BALL!

So, what went down at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala hosted by Anna Wintour, Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière, and Cate Blanchett last night? Well, a peacock escaped from its cageand started mingling with the guests, for starters. And Hollywood must have been empty last night because anyone who was anyone was at the party, from Lindsay Lohan, to Mick Jagger, all wearing their favorite designer couture. The world's top designers were also at the party, which feted the opening of the Paul Poiret retrospective, on view through August at the Met. AMNY has great coverage of what people were wearing and E!Online has the celeb coverage on lock. Style.com has a good overview of the evening's other highlights.

We've got photos after the jump.

CULTURE:TAKASHI MURAKAMI'S LATEST SHOW

Murakami, aka the Warhol of Japan, has been a fashionista's favorite Japanese artist since he collaborated with Louis Vuitton to create the now-iconic bags for the luxury brand. Known for his fine art approach to Japanese anime and  manga art, he has created large scale public sculptures, painting and films. His latest work is now on view at Gagosian Gallery through June 9.  The show, called “Tranquillity of the Heart, Torment of the Flesh: Open Wide the Eye of the Heart and Nothing Is Invisible,” reveals a different side to Murakami in a new series of monumental paintings of Daruma, the sage, founder of Zen Buddhism. The NY Times reported from the show's opening-- a traditional Zen Tea ceremony. Read the full story here.

NEWS: FAREWELL ISABELLA!

We are sad to report that one of the fashion world's most creative and influential people, Isabella Blow, passed away suddenly from cancer on monday morning at age 49. Blow was a living legend, known for her outrageous style, and her signature over-the-top Philip Treacy hats. Born to a noble English family, she began her editorial career serving as an assistant to Anna Wintour at American Vogue in 1981 and held posts at British Vogue, the Sunday Times Style magazine and, most recently, Tatler. A champion of young designers, she is credited for launching the career of Alexander McQueen, and Julien MacDonald, and models like Sophie Dahl and Stella Tennant. Eccentric, exuberant and a true original, she will be sorely missed.

RUNWAY: KSUBI S/S 2008

Ksubi unveiled its s/s 2008 fashion collection on May 3 at Australian Fashion Week and we cannot stop thinking about it-- It was totally inspiring! The collection was very fresh and had a dual quality. The first part of the show was dark and moody, with punk influences as well as graphic tees that were reminiscent of sci-fi paintings from the 80s.  Cosmic prints, and bright white looks punctuated the second half of the show. Pants were either super tight or baggy. Silhouettes focussed on layered looks.  Since AFW comes months before the rest of the world shows their s/s collections, we're sure Ksubi is going to set the tone and direction for the season. To see the full collection, click here.

DESIGN: SINGLE SPACE

From photographer Charles Ruger's ranch home in Texas, to real estate developer John Slavin's super minimalist home in Malibu, we quite liked taking a quick peek into some of the coolest bachelor pads out there in the NY Times' piece called Single Space. See the full slide show here.

NEWS: NEW LOOK FOR WHITE STRIPES

"They all want to look the same," laments music stylist Brandy St. John. "They all want clothes from the same stores, the same designers. But rock 'n' roll should be about one-of-a-kind outfits no one will have, or even want to wear."
Rose Apodaca interviews stylist Brandy St. John for the LA Times about the one of a kind look she's created for the White Stripes, one of rock's most influential bands when it comes to fashion. See the full story here.

MOVE OVER KATE! HERE COMES LILY ALLEN

We've been inspired by the style of rocker Lily Allen for a while now, and now the British style icon is introducing a clothing line for the British chain New Look. The collection, which debuts this week is inspired by Allen's style-- very vintage dress and sneakers. Girly, glam and streetwise all at the same time. And, Allen says of the collection, it's designed to fit an average sized girl, and is not just for the super skinny types who might be more inclined to try the Kate Moss collection for TopShop, which debuted last week to much fanfare.
