CULTURE: MARIMEKKO, THE STORY OF A NORDIC BRAND
The bold graphic designs of Marimekko continue to influence design as they keep returning to vogue and the company and its prints are easily recognizable, even today. The company, which revolutionized textile design for fashion and furniture with its unique approach- using artists’ designs on fabric, was founded in 1951 by a Finnish couple, Armi and Vilio Ratia. Marimekko was ahead of its time, not only in the designs but also the company’s management strategies were ground-breaking. With great confidence, Armi Ratia created the company’s unique aesthetics, and she succeeded in creating a sparkling and innovative atmosphere for her designers. The exhibition presents the development of more than 50 years and shows designs from the entire period focusing on the renewed innovation of the brand. The brightly colored strong graphic prints of Marimekko are on display at the Danish Museum of Art & Design of Art & Design through May 28.
