CULTURE: MARIMEKKO, THE STORY OF A NORDIC BRAND

The bold graphic designs of Marimekko continue to influence design as they keep returning to vogue and the company and its prints are easily recognizable, even today.  The company, which revolutionized textile design for fashion and furniture with its unique approach- using artists’ designs on fabric,  was founded in 1951 by a Finnish couple, Armi and Vilio Ratia. Marimekko was ahead of its time, not only in the designs but also the company’s management strategies were ground-breaking. With great confidence, Armi Ratia created the company’s unique aesthetics, and she succeeded in creating a sparkling and innovative atmosphere for her designers. The exhibition presents the development of more than 50 years and shows designs from the entire period focusing on the renewed innovation of the brand. The brightly colored strong graphic prints of Marimekko are on display at the Danish Museum of Art & Design of Art & Design through May 28.

TRUE LOVE FALSE IDOLS MASHUP TEE

“Typically, our work is hand drawn and tends toward a wild, stream-of-consciousness, overdesigned look,” says Alex 2Tone, designer of the Cali based collection True Love False Idols. That understatement is probably the only thing that's understated about the brand. TLFI's best selling styles include a flying squirrel “Cocaine Breakfast”, an intentional Gucci knockoff “You’re Only As Good As What You Steal” and the highly scrolled and somewhat obscured exhortation--“Fuck the Industry”. The brand has recently teamed up with the Diplomats to create this over the top graphic tee.

NEWS: GABE URIST COLLABORATES WITH BIG O

Japanese b-boy and designer Big-O of Phenomenon collaborated with Jewelry sculptor Gabriel Urist to create a rare and extremely limited piece for collectors, "Mr.P". The piece is a pendant that comes gold-plated or in sterling. The 80's b-boy strikes a classic pose with his beat box, details like his New Era hat make the piece modern, while the low tops are throwbacks from another era. Urist's work is of course known all around the world and is especially popular amongst fashionistas and b-boys in Tokyo, Barcelona and Paris. His rings, pendants, belt buckles and other pieces rended in everything from rose gold to gunmetal have earned him respect in the art world and recent contracts with the NBA and Timberland. Big-O is one half of the SWAGGER TOKYO design team, PHENOMENON is his own personal, relaxed luxury brand. "Mr. P" arrives at the Swagger flagship store in Tokyo the end of April.

KEY ITEM: KICKERS by OKI-NI

Kickers boots are making a bit of a comeback now and the first boot ever produced by Kickers in 1970, the Legend boot is now being re-released in an exclusive collection for Oki-Ni, the Savile Row streetwear boutique.

Like the original, the boot is made from natural nubuck leather with a crepe sole. And theyre washable. Each pair comes with its own wash bag. The idea is to wash the shoes and over time they will develop a soft, lived in look. Then there's the iconic flower shaped keychain. We used to collect as many as possible and wear dozens of them on our shoes. All of this comes in a replica of the original packaging. Footwear purists, your Kickers are in stock now!

REQUIRED READING: RANDOM QUESTIONS FOR PHILIP LIM

Lim has been a very busy boy of late. He launched a 60-look menswear line for fall, was nominated for a Swarovski Award for womenswear last month (to be announced at the CFDA Awards on June 4th), just moved to a new apartment, is shooting his Holiday look book in two days, unveiling a limited-edition line for Uniqlo in May, and is opening his first NYC boutique in July - all while putting the finishing touches on his resort line, planning the spring ‘08 collection and runway show, and designing a one-of-a-kind Sidekick for charity.  Fashion Informer caught up with Lim last week and asked him a few questions. STREET STYLE: MILAN

Milan is one of the world's fashion capitals, and the Italian flair for fashion isn't lost on the street style of that city. The Face Hunter went to Milan last week and got some great shots of what the kids are wearing. We've got some pics after the jump.

REQUIRED READING: TOMBOYS ARE IN

The sexy tomboy look is gaining popularity as Southern California sportswear labels that originated in men's adapt their strengths in tailoring and structure to women's wear, reports WWD. More after the jump.

After several seasons when flirty dresses dominated the runways and streets, trousers, vests and other tailored looks with a masculine edge appear to be picking up momentum. In the last year, Los Angeles brands Monarchy, Z-Brand and Boy. by Band of Outsiders have made the jump into women's wear, and Corpus and Grandma's Glock, both based here, and San Francisco's B. Son by Rebecca Beeson are marketing themselves as unisex lines.

The trend is the latest example of men's labels crossing over to the women's sector. The women's market has previously welcomed men's wear labels and designers, including Trovata, Raf Simons at Jil Sander, Rag & Bone and Thom Browne, who is branching into women's through his collaboration with Brooks Bros.

BRAND TO WATCH: CLAE SHOES

Several years ago, at the height of Dunk mania, an independent sneaker designer named Sung Choi, a former member of legendary streetwear label PNB Nation began offering guys an alternative. His label, Clae, achieved cult status among cultural creatives and guys who just wanted clean, comfortable footwear. Clae shoes were a hybrid-- offering athletic soles with fashion uppers. The brand has been on hiatus for a couple of years, but it is now being revived. Designer Sung Choi is back at the helm, with Derek Galkin, formerly of Medium footwear handling the marketing.  Three  styles are being released for summer, with a full collection available for fall. The shoes will only be available in 15 key retailers nationwide including Everything Must Go, Harlem; Bodega, Boston; and Huf, San Francisco.  More pics after the jump.

NEWS: HOLLYWOOD TRADING CO ENTERS THE BLOGOSPHERE

We love a good blog. And one of LA's most directional stores, Hollywood Trading Co, has just launched an interesting new one.  The blog goes beyong fashion, and reflects the events, people and ideas that make LA, or at least the HTC blogmaster, tick. With entries featuring no-car Sundays, a favorite newspaper vendor and vintage jeans, there is no rhyme or reason to what goes up the the site, but it's still pretty entertaining. Check it out here.

PARTY: USELESS MAGAZINE

It seems like every month a new indie/arty/culture mag launches. But Useless magazine is not as useless as its name suggests. The mag, which is created by Conrad Ventur—downtown scenester/photographer/party promoter started as a zine which Ventur handed out at his events and other nightclubs, is now a tabloid sized glossy with innovative design, profiles of creative types, interviews, and directional fashion.

The party for issue #5 was held in the loft space used by Andy Salzer, creative director of Yoko Devereaux, as his home, office and store, in a part of Williamsburg where few hipsters have dared to inhabit. The party was filled with the downtown beautiful crowd- artists, designers, party people, writers, were all in the mix.

The new issue features (among a huge list of others) Matthieu Laurette, Iwona Blaswick, Miltos Manetas, Chicks On Speed, Cocorosie, Jennifer West, John Isaccs and the band 'The Coydogs' featured wearing Yoko Devereaux...

KEY ITEM: JU$T ANOTHER RICH KID TEES

Spring is finally in the air, and we're feeling nautical again. That's why we're feeling these unique tees from Brooklyn based Ju$t Another Rich Kid. Designer Ken Courtney, known for his snarky slogans on cut and sew tees for the JARK label has asked British artist Stuart Semple (Nancyboy) to create the Pirates and Piracy collection of T-shirts.

"It's the combination of Ju$t Another Rich Kid as a modern-day pirate of cultural commodities, traditional thieving pirates and the very current incarnation of the piracy of intellectual property, including luxury brands, Hollywood films and popular music," Courtney tells Hintmag.com. Buy the tees here.

PARTY: PUMA 77 IN LONDON

We hear from wgsn.com that London's fashion fraternity were out in force last night to celebrate Puma's new French 77 collection. LEAH WOOD and LEMAR modelled "Court Classics" on an astroturf-covered catwalk at Claridges, with fashion designer KAREN MILLEN, comedian DOM JOLY and Arsenal football star and Calvin Klein model FREDDIE LJUNGBERG looking on. Hipster DJ DIMITRI FROM PARIS provided the tunes, while an appreciative (and obviously hungry) crowd mobbed hotel waiters for canapés. Wallpaper.com reports that Puma has produced a limited edition book of photographs by Hubertus von Hohenlohe that gives us a peek into the covetable playboy era that was its source of inspiration. Set against the lush Mediterranean landscape of Monte Carlo, the sporty label has reintroduced three of the decade’s icons (tennis ace Guillermo Villas, cinematic legend Udo Kier and motorcycle champion Giacomo Agostini) as ambassadors for the vintage-inspired collection, itself a seamless blend of sport and luxury.

TASTEMAKER Q&A: RICH HALL

Rich Hall is a native New Yorker and one of those ubiquitous scene legends that can never exist again. A former bouncer for CBGB’s, he’s now the head of artist relations, sales and marketing for Bandmerch, a company that handles merchandise and tours for a ton of artists—everyone from Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance to Linkin Park.

Rich took time out from being totally important to tell us about his style.

Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I try to keep up with what’s coming out of the UK, be it Ben Sherman to street punk. But usually when comes to being casual I tend to stick to band t shirts and jeans. I try to keep up with the urban trends but keep it stealth with a lot of black, slim and skinny fits. Some brands of jeans fit weird, so I’ll keep it straight leg with a cuff. Being simple is more effective than overdoing it.

Q: What's inspiring you now and what'll gonna be hot next season?
A: I love different placement on shirts with bright vivid fonts and sublimation of the prints. I also love the idea of the “all over" print whether it be diamonds on a shirt or a cartoon character's face. I love lighter t-shirts out there now that are called 30/1 or "thirty singles" and are made of a lighter woven fabric.

What is going to be hot next season? At my company, we’re doing a thing called "inside out print" where we basically print an image on the inside of the shirt and then print a second image on the front. I think it will rock the world.

Q: What about non-fashion stuff? What're you feelin?
A: I love art. Anything doing with silk-screening, graffiti, and pop art catches my eye. Again with bright colors and fonts, words and phrases def. make me do a double-take or get out my digicam and capture it.

Rich Hall wants a dog and everlasting ice cold green tea. Check him out here.

HATE SITES: THE NEW LOVE?

The streetwear market has long been dependent upon the internet for spreading news, raising awareness and keeping the community informed.  Streetwear bloggers are many, and they are otaku to the millionth degree. Needless to say, when checking hype sites religiously, things tend to get repetitive.

It’s little surprise then, the rise in hate blogs aimed at the market. Is hate really the new love? Is this generation making hate their calling card? This stuff’s definitely not rainbows and kitties (Old Jeezy you are too racist with your venom, my friend), but when we find ourselves surrounded by limited-kicks-fitteds-hot-new-tee-mr-cool-guy guys all the time who admittedly have a tendency to take themselves a little too seriously, we can’t help chuckling along with some of these guys.  www.shupshun.blogspot.comwww.oldjeezy.blogspot.com
