The National Arts Club will bestow designers Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos with its inaugural Young Designer Award on May 20. The organization hopes to make the champagne affair an annual one, recognizing and celebrating the freshness of fashion. "We chose them not only because they design for women, but also for men, and at the club we're really interested in getting men interested in fashion," said Chrishaunda Lee, chair of the fashion committee. To toast the occasion, DJ Cassidy is working with the designers to generate an original soundtrack for the evening.

Shipley and Halmos were two of the original founding members of the much-lauded brand Trovata, which has since disbanded and is run solely by John Whitledge. Shipley & Halmos' first collection is in stores now for spring, and is stocked in Manhattan at Barneys New York, Steven Alan, TG-170, and Mick Margo. (The Daily)

Reynolds notes with an almost tender fascination that the middle-aged Hispanic man “has big silver rings on every finger” and continually sports a de facto goatee, “black jeans, black leather cowboy boots, black western style button down shirt (un-tucked), and black leather jacket with fringe hanging from it” despite the L.A sun. Reynold’s imagines his muse with “a sawed off shot gun under his jacket” and a perpetual “pissed off” expression. Given this description as a starting point, we’re looking at the shoe collection in a whole new light.-- KB

A 32 foot-long “puzzle bench” composed of moveable segments on castors lines the south wall, while a modern steel open-cube structure serves as display for the clothing collection. The retail space will showcase the ROGAN mainline collection for men and women, as well as a curated limited edition series and a rotating line-up of guest collaborators. Gallery-style installations will take place in the shop with a host of artists, local and international, known and un-known.

Photo: refinery

Today, Cone Denim is the only manufacturer of selvedge denim on this side of the hemisphere and almost certainly the only supplier of selvedge denim woven on the American looms in the world with roots reaching back to the original riveted five-pocket. The White Oak Collection is manufactured by the historically famous White Oak Plant™ which has been continuously producing denim since 1905.

More after the jump.

Inspired by the vintage styling and original constructions of the early to mid 1900's, Cone Denim developed the White Oak Collection for the premium market, denim aficionados and vintage collectors. An important but little known fact is that Cone narrow looms are American-made by Draper, a loom manufacturer that no longer exists, according to the Self Edge web site. (The store has a limited collabo range of denim with the mill. View it here.) When the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company supplied Levi Strauss the lot of XX denim for the original Levi's riveted denim waist overalls those goods were woven on Draper looms. Through the many decades, including the golden years of workwear, Cone-forged fabric was the requisite for durable denim garments for brands both obscure and famous. Today Cone Denim continues that tradition by not compromising on quality, from fiber to fabric.
