Happy Socks, purveyors of fun, colorful $10 socks from Sweden had their US launch party Friday night. Cator Sparks reports: You know how editors can be. ‘Oh another launch of something. yawn!’ Well nobody was yawning at the US launch of Happy Socks Friday night.  From 8pm-7am (yes you heard us right!) editors, taste makers and a whole gaggle of Swedes rocked out in a Nolita bi-level raw space with two gigantic terraces.  To everyone’s delight it wasn’t another passed apps and premium vodka event in a hip hotel. We’ve never even heard of Astor Vodka but it came in plastic gallon jugs and by the end of the night everyone learned to drink cocktails with no ice– party people were stumbling around with free socks in one hand and a bottle in the other. Thank God for the Amstel Light that kept this pr man from passing out into an oblivion of 80 proof scandal.

Viktor and Mikael, founders of Happy Socks could not have been more amused with the evening. Their friend Pelle from the Hives DJ’ed, everyone tore up the dance floor and in case anyone didn’t already know, they proved that Swedes are the hottest ticket in fashion right now. (Cator Sparks) .

SPARKING INTEREST: ALLEGRI

News No Comments

Finally! I have been searching for a great trench since I was a wee dandy tot. I remember searching through London Fog’s in elementary school and coming up empty. Too bulky, too long, too Inspector Gadget. Even recently I have been hunting down outerwear brands for that perfect trench. No luck. Then this little email pops up whilst I’m eating breakfast this morning and I drop my fork. The line Allegri, famous for their rainwear since 1960, has been revamped and is looking sharp. They have hired designer Francesco Scognamiglio as their Creative Director for the brands fashion line launching for fall 2009.   The family run business is based in Florence and has three brands:  *01 01 09 a Allegri- presented at Pitti in January is designed by Francesco Scognamiglio and has a more lux edge with embroidery and fur details.  *Allegri Milano- This is the classic collection but it has been updated with modern fabrics, cuts and detailing.  *Allegri Purple Label- More sporty and young pieces. Allegri are presenting the collection in mid-march in NYC. Don’t think I won’t be first in line to check it out. – Cator Sparks    For more info take a look at their very watery website.

PARIS FASHION WEEK: CLUB SANDWICH

News No Comments

Sunday in Paris was the night to be out. Men’s fashion week came to a close at Club Sandwich, a monthly down-and-dirty party held at Club Neo in the Eighth Arrondissement. Tout le fashion crowd was out letting loose — deadlines be damned — as were random bedazzled boys, drag queens and one or two porn stars. But even among the poseurs, the person who received the most attention was Casey Spooner, the Fischerspooner frontman. Spooner, left, was in town to promote the band’s new album, which is due out in May, and to meet with new designers for his next tour. Just hours before arriving at the club he had been sporting long brown rocker hair, but the stylist at the Romain Kremer show lopped the locks off into a blunt bob and dyed it platinum blond, giving Spooner a new look that scarily brings to mind Raffaela Carra. SPARKING INTERESTS BASEL EDITION: L’UOMO VOGUE PARTY

News No Comments

The frock and froth set were out in full force at the swanky Casa Tua Club to celebrate L’Uomo Vogue’s Miami issue shot by Bruce Weber. Iris Apfel strolled in wearing gold python pants and a Mayan death mask on her necklace, “My husband wasn’t too thrilled with this purchase, needless to say.” Naomi Campbell was wearing a sleek, spangly  Alaia number, but her most prominent accessory was her new, new face (yes everyone was talking about it).  Other gilded guests included Cecilia Dean, Thom Browne and the much hyped Montcler crew. When asked about the new glossy, very naked issue Franca Sozzani told us that she , “Thought a Miami issue would be great. Bruce lives here so thought it was a good moment and here we are!”   More after the jump.

SPARKING INTERST MIAMI: ART BASEL OPENING

News No Comments

Everyone in the art world exhale! Art Basel is alive and well. This reporter has been on the down low asking dealers how sales are and they seem to be steady. Although, we did hear this in one stall: One gallery owner quipped "We are really selling art! We are really selling art!" As his customer nasaly exclaimed, "Well you’re the only one!" But the buzz is here and people are milling about dressed to the nines. As you can see, some here are dressed to the tens and twelves. After four hours of de Koonings, Dash’s and Diebenkorn’s we are heading to the newest shopping destination, the Webster. Where my date for the weekend, Price, is planning on scooping up some Balenciaga before we head off into a night of debauchery. PIcs after the jump. (Cator Sparks)

SPARKING INTERESTS- I HART PLAID

News No Comments

A sartorial savvy friend of mine sent me a link to these ties and quicker than a dandy can buy out Bergdorf I had a dinner date with David Hart. His ties are a fresh addition to the collegiate looks that are so popular these days. Why tartan you may ask? Well in the words of the crafty cravatier, “ I started looking into tartans for selfish reasons.  I wanted something unique to wear at Patrick McMullan’s annual St. Patrick’s Day party, and I figured what better way to celebrate than to show up in the McMullan clan tartan?  I started doing in depth research with one of the oldest weaving mills in Scotland and was able to find a few interesting variations.  The funny thing is I didn’t even end up wearing the tie that night, Pat’s son Liam did.  He looked great in it! “ David is an FIT grad whose most previous job was at Tommy Hilfiger. He jumped the corporate ship to focus on his ties and the jump has paid off. Bergdorf Goodman has picked up the line. How does one get their first collection at BG? “I wore them down,” David admits. “My wife says I acted like a secret agent …going every weekend. Eventually one of the managers gave me a card for the men’s buyer.” We here at WATM admire such perseverance on the fashion front!  For more images and info check out  www.davidhartnyc.com (Cator Sparks)

SPARKING INTEREST: TAXI TREASURES

News No Comments

Did anyone lose a sweater?  I was rolling out of the GMHC charity Fashion Forward fashion show the BPMW crew worked on last night when Joy hailed a cab and found a little luxe present just for me. She sat on the perfect navy Brooks Brothers cotton/cashmere sweater size medium. Rejoice!   This is one of those magical little moments I love about living in New York. Finding great things littered about this fair city of ours. Who hasn’t had a chair in their apartment they found on the street? Who doesn’t think, ‘shwing!’ when we sit on the L train and find a new AM New York to dive into? And then there are what I call, ‘Taxi Treasures’; those little gifts from the drunks or rushed city dwellers that result in new headphones, books or clothes for moi.
Mind you I’m a good Christian boy and if I find a phone I report it. I lost my phone one night in an East Village cab and a lady named, ‘Honey Bee’ called me and had my phone in Harlem. I brought her a bag of MAC makeup in thanks and she was overcome with excitement (my roommate used to work there so we had stockpiles!).  I am sporting my new BB’s sweater as I type. I woke up this morning and was eager to see what I could pair it with in my closet to wear to the Emery Awards  tonight. Edina was appalled that I hadn’t washed it yet but hey, I smelled it and it was fine! Honestly, how dirty could a Brooks Brothers sweater be? A bit damp from a morning row? A bit soiled from a long day on the course? A bit dusty after a morning hack through the park? I’m not really too worried about it.
So thanks Father Thrift for an early holiday gift!
