(CAPSULE) PARIS: FOCUS – NOIR BASIC

News No Comments

noirbasic.jpg

Not only do we love the guys at Noir Basic for the rockin’ party they threw at Black Calvados last night, but also, and more importantly, for the unbelievable leathers and hoodies that have been the talk of the town the past few days. Using only the highest quality of materials and manufacturers (think, factories that produce leather for Hermes & Celine to name a few and silk linings by Marc Rozier, who has produced scarves and jackets for Hermes & Zilli exclusively for almost a century). Their buttery soft, and paper thin leathers feature classic detailing (like gargoyle zippers & hoodie pulls) that represent the truly 100% Parisian-ness of their produced (designed and produced entirely). Additionally their denim sailor and baseball jackets are cashmere denim with 30% cashmere, and guaranteed to wear wonderfully. With a pop-up shop in front of  L’Eclaireur and collaborations with Oki-Ni, London and ParisTexas, Copenhagen, these guys are obviously doing everything right. Buy one of their leathers and wear it for life. – Andrew Mukamal

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: Carola Euler

Berlin‘s queen of subtle refinement takes a moment to answer some questions. (–Antonio Reis)

How do you set Carola Euler apart from other menswear designers?

Love at second or third sight. Unless you are blind.

What are some of the major trends in Carola Euler ss10?

Lightweight suits, deep necklines, yachting sheiks in tennis shorts and an invitation to customize.

Alps or Rockies?

Alps on a snow slide

And finally, how will you enjoy your time in Paris?

I will enjoy relaxing nights with friends I haven’t seen in a while, drinking wine in parks and on balconies, be a holiday smoker and eat fresh baguette with cheese until I leave again.

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: Libertine-Libertine

Interviews, Men's Brands, News, TradeShows No Comments

wesleyanedu-1.jpg

“Affection depuis deux mille neuf” cries newly-hatched design house Libertine-Libertine. SS10 will be the debut season for the Copenhagen based brand. One can hardly contain one’s excitement to witness Libertine-Libertine’s creations strut down the runway at (capsule) Paris, but until then, a lil’ Q&A will have to do. (–Antonio Reis)

From where do you draw inspiration for Libertine-Libertine?

We consider ourselves as contemporary expounders of our surroundings. The styles evolve with the personalities wearing them and the experience of this interaction serves as a strong fascination point and foundation for the brand. Determination meets licentiousness embracing the contradictions and diversity of life.

The line, consisting of elementary designs, seasonal items and a new take on classics, defines a considered yet effortless style rooted in a masculine and embracing universe. All accompanied by the obvious counterpart, a beautiful and sexy women’s line featuring wearable and well-fitted essentials.

Elaborate on your different philosophy and approach to the industry.

Presenting four annual collections, replenished by bi-annual side projects, and fast deliveries we have set up a structure that breaks down the stiff seasonal barriers and contributes to create dynamics and versatility in the business. We follow a concept based on mobility and presence in the market place which allow us to focus on the possibilities each city & customer potentially have to offer – whether it’s a creative project or a business opportunity. We wish to involve ourselves personally as much as possible with our collaborators and set a new standard in the way of perceiving the fashion industry.

Being your debut season, what do you hope to establish for Libertine-Libertine at (capsule) Paris?

I have huge expectations for Capsule this season and I expect us to establish a good customer portfolio there. The show vouches for a high level of buyers and journalists from around the world and I trust our line will be very well received.

Will you be living it up in Paris?

Absolutely, how cold you not –  but business comes first of course. However, the city’s atmosphere suits us perfectly and having been there on many occasions before we have some traditions which I’m always looking very much forward to. Of course involving good friends and a decent amount of incredible French wine & food.

Capsule Paris on H(y)r

Men's Brands, News, TradeShows No Comments

capsule-paris.jpgRyan from Hyrcollective is planning to come to Paris next week. He writes…It’s just about that time again as designers around the world are putting the final touches on their SS10 collections. Capsule has made a name for themselves and especially their Paris show as one of the best for menswear. On June 26-28 the show will play host to a number of great brands, but there are a particular few that we at h(y)r are fans of. Our Legacy for their complete collections and most wearable head to toe outfits, accessories and footwear. We still need more places to try it on in North American before ordering from Tres Bien…kidding. Gitman Vintage, need I say more? The best oxfords on the market. SNS Herning for their rich heritage and more recently updated knit designs. Mismo for the best quality bags on the market and a beautifully clean design aesthetic. I will be on the ground in Paris this season covering the show and other showings around town. It should be busy but we will have some fresh photos from the field.

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair

Men's Brands, News No Comments

fifthaveshoerepair_portrait.jpg

Started in 2004 by Swedish design duo Astrid Olsson and Lee Cotter, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair looks to its namesake London cobblery for lessons in craftsmanship and longevity. On the eve of unveiling their 2010 summer collection, the pair answered a few questions for us before heading off to (capsule) Paris.

What’s the inspiration for your S/S 2010 line?
The inspiration comes from very technical sculptures of Russian constructivists, from the simplicity of Chinese workers jackets and from the colourful landscape of an unreal fairytale-world.

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: Timo

Accessories, Interviews, Men's Brands, News, TradeShows No Comments

(capsule) is thrilled to welcome back Timo to showcase their impeccable ready to wear collection. Presenting their latest goods in Paris at the end of June – I caught up with the man himself (and his business partner Alan) to see what’s been keeping this duo busy.

*What are you working on now?
My partner Alan and I are working on our Spring-Summer 2010 Mens and Womens RTW collection that include 15 styles of knitwear and a continuation of the 7 neckwear styles. It is our first full collection.

*What has caught your eye recently?
The paintings of Austrian artist Ernest Ludwig Kirchner (go see his work on the top floor of the Neue Galerie uptown sometime! amazzzing stuff.) The way that he captured and reinterpreted bourgeois style during his life is inspiring. We are also crushing on Allison Mosshart of the Kills. Met her at Coachella and WOW!

*What are you planning on showing for SS10 (key trends, fabrics, colors etc…)

We have incorporated various textured fabrics, muted colors (including several shades of blue), knitwear some with a drop-needle porous finish.

*What are some themes found throughout your collection?
The collection is called "A Life Full of Holes." The look can be described as period modern, old-world aesthetics reincarnated. We have created a print that will be shown (mostly in our Womens collection) that is inspired by a decaying English garden.

*Any summer plans?
Will be with YOU in Paris! Then perhaps the West Coast for a weekend or two. Alan and I will also be venturing out to the East End of Long Island for some short excursions as well.

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: Commune de Paris 1871

Interviews, Men's Brands, News, TradeShows No Comments

Commune de Paris 1871The spirit of the French Revolution lives on in Commune de Paris 1871, and thankfully, sans-culottes are nowhere to be seen in the collection. The house takes some time to answer some pre-showing questions.(–Antonio Reis)

It looks like Edition 2009 is a cohesive, all-inclusive collection featuring everything a man could ever want, from polos and pullovers to pillows and posters. Any other curiosities we can expect in ss10?

Actually, collection you see on our website is a preview of our next ss10 collection. There will be few extra models (others polos, shirts and another bag) that we will show at Capsule, but what you saw is the main part of the collection.

Will the Munchausen partnership continue in ss10?

We will continue our work with Munchausen next season…we are preparing a Christmas limited collection with them for a big french store.

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: Soulland

Interviews, Men's Brands, News, TradeShows No Comments

Soulland_pic.jpg

Danish brand Soulland has spent the past few seasons perfecting wearable menswear. As the company begins to get some serious international attention, its 23-year-old designer, Silas Adler, took a moment to answer some questions for us in New York before heading off to (capsule) Paris. (--Sara Lerner)

Each season you take a big step forward in terms of heading in a high fashion direction. What are you doing for 2010 to keep that going?
If you look at Soulland now and 3 years back it’s clear that we have moved from a rather street inspired vibe towards a more fashion or classical menswear vibe. It’s something that just came naturally. We grew up during the last couple of years and so did our style and the clothing we do. For me, as a designer, it was also important to challenge my skills and feel development in the designs. In 2010, we will follow the same path but work even more with fabric and detail. If you look at the greatest fashion menswear brands of the last 200 years detail is always the key.

More after the jump.

A Dose of (capsule) Paris: GITMAN VINTAGE

Chris Olberding, the man behind cult favorite Gitman Vintage, took a minute out of his busy schedule to tell us what he has in line for the upcoming 2010 season as he prepares for (capsule) Paris. (Yale Breslin)

What are you working on now?  Polishing off SS10; overseeing one very cool pant project for a much forgotten American manufacturer, Corbin; and finalizing production for what will hopefully be a clever collaboration for a late SS10 launch… details to follow.

What has caught your eye recently?   In April it was the Fennica division at Beams and Hiroshi Tsubouchi shoes, as well as the cherry blossoms in Kyoto.  In May, the Picasso show at Gagosian and the roof sculpture at the MET.  This month: Roger Federer.
