On the Scene at the GQ Best New Menswear Designers in America Showcase

Events, Magazines and Media, News, Street Pics No Comments

Picture19Any time the gentlemen from GQ put on an event, you can expect the crowd to be littered with fashionable folks rocking some of their signature looks.  Last night’s party for the magazine’s annual Best New Menswear Designers in America competition certainly fulfilled this rule of thumb, prompting us to comb the crowd for an impromptu photo survey of some of the best-dressed men (and one lucky woman) in attendance.  Have a look below to see if you can ID some of the famous faces and stylish gents who came through the IAC Building, including this handsome devil at left.  (Steve Dool)

Cator in Mexico… Street Pics

News, Street Pics No Comments

Mexico FW.jpg

Cator Sparks is partying it up down at Mexico Fashion Week. He reports that there were a handful of notable designers, including Man Candy, Trista, and Marvin y Quetzal, but more notable was the street fashion– especially the eye popping eyewear. He writes: “Today I spotted more bow ties which made me nervous but most were customized with necklaces weaved through or even made of plastic. Fave new find? A glamazon named ‘C’est Moi’ who came to the shows with blood trickling down her top.An early ode to Day of the Dead?”  He sent us a few pics. After the jump.

The Gentlemen of Bacongo

Men's Brands, News, Street Pics No Comments

bocongo1.jpg

The first shipment of The Gentleman of Bacongo is due to arrive at Trolley Books HQ in London today, and a sneak peak of what’s inside went up on the site earlier this month. The book pays homage to that sartorially superior breed of man known as the sapeur, and photographer Daniele Tamagni captures all his subjects in full dandy regalia.  The history of the sapeurs dates back to 1950s Congo, to a rumba singer by the name of Papa Wemba. Wemba founded Le SAPE (Society of Ambianceurs and Persons of Elegance) as a reaction to President Mobutu’s prohibition of the western suit, and he still unofficially holds court to this day. Photographer Liz Johnson-Artur shot Wemba for FADER #42 as part of a fashion story on the sapeur club scene in Paris, and these days you’re more likely to see him draped in head-to-toe Yohji or Comme, than any of the outlandish zoot suits he wore back in the early days. Right now though, it’s the new SAPE generation in Central Africa that is getting all the fashion bragging rights, since apparently Sir Paul Smith based his entire Spring 2010 women’s wear collection on Tamagni’s new pictures, dressing all his ladies as if they were on the arm of a sapeur.  Amazing pics after the jump (Fader)

Iceland Fashion Disaster

News, RUNWAY, Street Pics No Comments

ice;and.jpg

Cator Sparks went to Iceland Fashion Week last week on some crazy press trip that turned out to be a total sham! The event was not supported by any of the local designers, and the poor press folks who did go out there were essentially left high and dry with no local guide no transportation and no real fashion shows to see. Cator did meet a few nice people out there and filed this report: Iceland is a real rare jewel in the sea filled with amazing topography, fascinating history and the majestic landscapes (the lunar landscape in these pics is thanks to a volcano that erupted 800 years ago). But dang y’all it’s already cold here! Everyone is wearing the coolest fair isle chunky knits that me and a crew of editors are eager to scout out. A few pics of participating designers after the jump. (Cator Sparks)

Michael Jackson: Pop Culture Fashion Icon

When it comes to the world of fashion, both men’s and women’s, Michael Jackson is fashion icon.

He inspired us to wear loafers and white socks. He inspired us to wear jackets with military details. He inspired us to wear one glittery glove. He inspired a resurgence of aviator glasses too.

You get the picture. We know the looks. You don’t need us to list them for you after the jump. (– Regina Walton)
