A Dose of (capsule) Women’s: The Local Firm

Capsule, Interviews, Women's Brands No Comments

From their innovative menswear and womenswear to their incredibly stylish accessories line, Swedish label The Local Firm never disappoints.  The brand, which was founded in 2007 by Richard Hutchinson and Axel Nyhage, has a distinctive design code which combines high fashion attire with innovative jeans design. THE LOCAL FIRM´s concept is inspired by art, architecture and design from the former east-block and the German Bauhaus movement. The design concept “A contrast of status” combines garments and materials that distinguish themselves by contrasting one another. For SS11 the designers were inspired by a parachute and added that light and airy feel to their clean grey/ grey Bauhaus colourblock vs black leather base. See the SS11 collection at (capsule) women’s. Sept 21-22.

A Dose of (capsule) NY Women’s: Boxing Kitten

Capsule, Interviews, TradeShows, Women's Brands No Comments

Boxing Kitten’s vintage-inspired pieces celebrate “the spirit and lives of mid-century American women” with “designs modernized for the women of today and the future.” After graduating from college and working as a buyer at a small boutique, the designer Maya Lake began designing and making custom garments for friends and family. The designs quickly garnered celebrity fans such as Erykah Badu, and after some word of mouth Boxing Kitten was created. The line now counts Beyonce, Solange, and Rihanna amongst their clientele. Lake describes the line as “Ethnic Rockabilly”. Boxing Kitten combines colorful African textiles known as Ankara, or Wax Hollandais. The line also has a vintage inspiration with subtly sexy silhouettes. The SS2011 collection is inspired by the quirky, powerful vixens in the film cult classic by Russ Meyer, “Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!” This collection shows a different edgier side of the Boxing Kitten woman while retaining the flirty and playful attitude that the line is known for. While Boxing Kitten is known for the use of colorful and bold prints, the Ss11 collection is built on black and white making it much more silhouette focused. Boxing Kitten recently collaborated with indie footwear brand Osborn. More pics, after the jump. View the full SS11 collection at (capsule) women’s, Sept 21-22 in NYC.

Vintage HQ: Consortiums NY

Interviews, Men's Brands, News, Retail No Comments

Vintage Polo Sport

Andre Munoz, curator of Consortiums New York, may be quick to deny any attempt at categorizing his store’s stock, but vintage prep seems to be a running theme. The Delancey Street shop’s secondhand clothing pieces are all simple and well made, consist of nicely faded primary colors and seem to encompass an affinity for ’90s prep icons like Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica.  With everything old becoming new again, the revival of this era’s simple looks is no surprise—the style is just old enough to be nostalgic, yet sufficiently clean-cut to be seen as a denouncement of current prep counterparts (think youthful, boastful Hollister and Abercrombie pieces). While the prep school way of dressing has never really been our of style, autumn/winter ‘10 catwalks from Celine to Chloe featured a minimalist vibe that harkened back to the days when New England chic ruled retail. “It’s a cleaner aesthetic with timeless pieces that you can wear when you’re 15 or 55 years old,” explains Munoz. New Order: Timo Weiland + Simon Spurr

Capsule, Interviews, Men's Brands, TradeShows No Comments

Arcade44 recently caught up with Alan Eckstein and Timo Weiland of Timo Weiland and Simon Spurr at (capsule) NYC.  While the designers have a very different approach to fashion, both share a commitment to fine tailoring while capturing the new spirit of American menswear.  The video takes you through Timo Weiland’s Garment District studio and Simon Spurr’s loft overlooking the Hudson River in the days leading up to (capsule) while giving you an inside look at their design processes and ideas.

Simon Spurr:  “There is a new wave of menswear.  And I think there has to be a next Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein.  There has to be a new guard.  Why shouldn’t it be one of us?”

Timo Weiland:  “Absolutely.  Or all of us.”

Fraser Cooke x Jean Touitou

Interviews, Men's Brands, News No Comments

Hypebeast tipped us off to this compelling interview conducted by Fraser Cooke with APC’s Jean Touitou in Interview:

When thinking of understated, minimal men’s and women’s clothing with that hard-to-define effortless something, the name Atelier de Production et de Création, or A.P.C., is one that immediately springs to mind. Jean Touitou started the label in 1987 as a reaction  to what he saw as the loud, money-focused, gaudy mood of the ’80s. An idealist and revolutionary who had fallen somehow unexpectedly into fashion in the late ’70s, Touitou, born in Tunisia and raised in Paris, was looking for a movement and couldn’t find one, so he decided to create an alternative to what he saw around him. Relying more upon his gut instincts and amalgamating his genuine interests (such as music) and friends into the mix rather than following a more traditional business approach, Jean Touitou’s A.P.C. has established a somewhat timeless chic that has continued to resonate some 23 years, now with a whole new generation appreciating the brand and new stores opening in New York and Paris this year.
